| With “the Belt and Road” initiative,Ningxia has received more attention in domestic and international economic cooperation and industrial transformation and development in western China.The research on the economic discourse features of Ningxia in domestic and foreign mainstream media can help us to understand the degree of concern about the development of Ningxia’ s economy and culture,and also provide a reference for the propaganda of local public opinion.Based on the theory of critical discourse analysis(CDA),the study explores the linguistic features of quantitative results in the framework of Fairclough’s three-dimensional theoretical model.Then,interpret the image of Ningxia and explain the media attitude and its possible reasons through analyzing the context of news discourse with the help of concordance.The results show that:(1)By comparing the reporting frequency of Ningxia,the column chart data shows that the number of reports on the economic theme of Ningxia in the “the Belt and Road” Chinese corpus is nearly four times that of countries along the BRI and countries non-along the BRI.After transforming it into a line chart,it is found that the overall reporting trend of the three corpora is declining in the later stage of the first stage,and has increased to varying degrees in the second and third stages.In the latter two stages,the reporting frequency of the Chinese corpus is increasing most significantly,while the reporting frequency of the two corpora of countries along the BRI and countries non-along the BRI is increasing slightly.Through its concordance of Chinese corpus,we found that the frequency of reporting was closely related to the major economic,trade or cultural activities Ningxia participated in under the background of the “the Belt and Road Initiative”.In order to further understand the economic news reporting focus of Ningxia of the three corpora,analyzing the Key words and their concordance of the three corpora shows that the “the Belt and Road” Chinese corpora mainly focused on the economical reports,especially the international trade cooperation and the reporting of events relating to the economic development of Ningxia;Corpus reports from countries along the BRI focus on national economic and trade cooperation,investment and other events,and very few are political reports involving international relations and COVID-19 events;The reporting discourse of the corpora of non-along BRI countries uses the “the Belt and Road” as the focus,but focusing more on international relations,and political reporting of COVID-19 events.(2)Examining the sources and reporting modes of news reports,of the three corpora,it is found that the reporting sources of the “the Belt and Road” Chinese corpus are specific,with the highest direct discourse citation rate,a positive and clear attitude,and closely focusing on promoting the construction of the “strategic fulcrum of the Silk Road Ningxia”;Most of the reports from the corpora of countries along the Belt and Road come from clear sources,and use the reporting mode of alternating direct and indirect discourse,which is neutral and practical in emotional attitude,and emphasizes that the “the Belt and Road”initiative brings tangible benefits to economic development;The proportion of reports from semi specific sources in non-along BRI countries corpus is relatively high,and the usage rate of vague discourse is the highest,leaving room for discourse construction.The reporting attitude tends to be questioning and worrying.(3)Analyzing the possible factors for the formation of Ningxia’ s economic development communication image.One of the reasons is the impact of the COVID-19 on the economic development environment;China’s strategic deployment of the “the Belt and Road” initiative and its foreign economic cooperation are mainly oriented towards Arab countries,which is also an important factor.The results of the study suggest that Ningxia should make better use of the development opportunity of the “the Belt and Road” to enhance the strategic position of its publicity work,and at the same time actively deepen its economic and cultural cooperation with countries,especially those along the BRI. |
