| This report pertains to the Chinese-English translation practice of Art Exhibition Halls of Tianfu New Area, commissioned by the International Cooperation Bureau of Tianfu New Area in 2021.Its primary objective is to promote Chinese culture and art exhibition halls of Tianfu New Area among foreign embassies in Chengdu and elevate local art and culture to the attention of foreign acquaintances. This,in turn, aims to facilitate their comprehension and appreciation of Chinese culture and art.The source text is a publicity text that expounds upon six primary art exhibition halls located in Chengdu’s Tianfu New Area, including Wangshu Hall,Maojiawan Art Museum, and Guanghui Art Museum. It also showcases the exhibits on display in these galleries, consisting of iconic Chinese cultural artworks. The source text is distinguished by its elegant and poetic style, rife with aesthetic elements, cultural connotations, and multifarious facets of Chinese culture. The text is anchored in classics, replete with a large number of four-character phrases,culture-loaded words,run-on sentences and parallel structures, serving as a publicity text that acquaints foreign audiences with Chinese cultural art.Drawing on the distinctive features of the source text and its property as a publicity text imbued with rich Chinese culture, the variation translation theory holds great sway over the translation process. Thus, the author has opted to employ Huang Zhonglian’s variation translation theory as a guiding principle for the Chinese-English translation of Art Exhibition Halls of Tianfu New Area. The variation translation theory,as formulated by Huang Zhonglian, constitutes a cultural approach to translation that entails a meticulous focus on the target readers and the specific demands under the specific context. To effectively translate the content or form of the source text, this theory calls for the employment of seven distinct adaptation techniques: addition, edition, narration, integration, alteration, deletion and condensation.Notably, this theory has been extensively implemented in the context of publicity text translation, where it has facilitated the achievement of variational translation in the source text.Through the use of the aforementioned adaptation techniques, this approach has effectively addressed challenges encountered in C-E translation of publicity text such as cultural background knowledge, and disparities in language forms between Chinese and English, and has consequently rendered the translation more attuned to the needs of the target readers. As a result, the readability and comprehensibility of the translation have improved, and the dissemination of Chinese culture and art has been enhanced. In essence, this approach has distilled the adaptation techniques of variational translation theory in the context of publicity texts, thereby providing a valuable framework for the application of variational translation theory in guiding publicity texts translation. |
