A Report On The English-Chinese Translation Of Complex Sentences In Navigating Sleeplessness (Excerpts) Under The Guidance Of Skopos Theory

With the change of lifestyle and the acceleration of pace of life,people have more and more pressure,which leads to many sleep problems among people.The research of China Sleep Research Society shows that 38.2% of Chinese adults suffer insomnia and the number will be on the rise.Sleep problems not only affect people’s life and study,but affect mental and physical health.It is important to have a right understanding of sleep disorders.The translation report is based on the English-Chinese translation of the book Navigating Sleeplessness.The translator selected the first three chapters from the book as source text to analyze its translation under the guidance of Skopos Theory.Navigating Sleeplessness introduces sleep mechanism and sleep disorders and how to treat sleep disorders.Navigating Sleeplessness is a popular science book,which belongs to informative text.The book involves a lot of knowledge of sleep and contains a lot of complex sentences,which are features and difficulties of the book.The primary purpose of the translator and important point of the translation are to convey and communicate information truthfully,not to reproduce the source text.Therefore,the translator chose Skopos Theory as theoretical guidance in this translating practice.The translation report aims to analyze the translation methods of complex sentences in popular science text under the guidance of Skopos Theory.The translator adopts translation skills,such as sequencing,reversing,division,and amplification under the guidance of three basic principles of Skopos Theory,namely skopos rule,coherence rule and fidelity rule,which make the target text be suitable for the habits of target readers and accepted better.Through this translation practice,the translator wants to explore the translation methods of complex sentences in popular science texts,convey information about sleep disorders to readers who have little knowledge,help readers have a correct attitude to sleep disorders and find better treatment for their sleep disorders.
