In December 2020,Taijiquan,a century-old martial art,was officially inscribed on the United Nations Educational,Scientific and Cultural Organization(UNESCO)Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.As the major pathway to international Taijiquan dissemination and promotion,the English translation of Taijiquan deserves our attention.However,the current English translation of Taijiquan mostly focuses on guideline of Taijiquan skills,ignoring the experience of famous Taijiquan masters.Most of the dialogues of famous Taijiquan masters are not in the form of text,but the content is mostly personal experience of the masters.It contains valuable experience and the language is relatively concise.At the same time,it is great material for Taijiquan dissemination.It should be used as an important part in spreading Taijiquan and Taiji culture.The thesis selects the Highest Excellence Like Water: Dialogues with Famous Chinese Taijiquan Masters as the material for this translation practice.The dialogue comprehensively displays the perception process,way of thinking,and experience of Taijiquan masters in practicing Taijiquan.The content covers a wide range of Taijiquan knowledge and professional vocabularies with concise language.However,its meaning is profound and thought-provoking,which is an excellent work of Taijiquan rarely seen.In view of the dialogue characteristics,the translation uses relevance theory as a guide,and summarizes the translation methods of the dialogues of famous Taijiquan masters from the lexical,syntactic and textual levels.For terms,the translator adopts the combination of transliteration,literal translation and interpretation;the translation of sentences applies the method of conversion from declarative sentence to interrogative sentence,adding answers and carrying out sentence structure conversion;for textual level,the translator starts from the lexical cohesion and the conversion from parataxis to hypotaxis,so as to conform to the writing habits of English language.This translation practice not only enriches the application of relevance theory,but also accumulates Taijiquan English translation materials in the context of Taijiquan translation.
