Research On Daniel A Bell’s "Virtuous And Capable Thought"

The publication of Daniel A.Bell’s "Political Meritocracy" has aroused many scholars’ controversy,and the content of his research is not deep and comprehensive enough,so there is still academic value for in-depth discussion.From the following aspects,this paper studies the politics of Daniel A.Bell.First of all,why is political meritocracy worth introducing? The criterion of judging the political system needs to proceed from rationality,legality and reality.In western democracies,the electoral system is a “one-person,one-vote” voting system.Whether the winning officials are competent for the position or not,they will abide by the principle of subordinating the minority to the majority.Such an electoral system can easily lead to tyranny.In theory,the political task of meritocracy is to select the people with high moral and super ability to contribute to the society,so that in ideal,meritocracy has the possibility of overcoming tyranny.Second,why does meritocracy have to interrogate itself? Because meritocracy will encounter the following problems.The political legitimacy of meritocracy is the key issue that meritocracy needs to solve.In essence,it is the source of power.In the final analysis,it is the issue of the legitimacy of political power.And Democratic politics has solved this problem of the source of power institutionally.Whether the political system of meritocracy easily leads to corruption,in fact,the emergence of corruption is not necessarily related to the political system,and democratic politics can also easily lead to corruption.Furthermore,the political meritocracy proposed by Daniel A.Bell uses virtue,IQ,and emotional intelligence as the criteria for selecting political leaders.Virtue is one of the criteria for selecting.It is difficult to carry out realistic operability.It is also difficult to be objective and fair.It can be seen that the selection in meritocratic politics will encounter practical difficulties.The last point,both meritocracy and democratic politics have their advantages and disadvantages,and then we will explore whether the two are possible to merge,and the integration of merit and democracy is conducive to creating the best political system.The politics of meritocracy has a certain value and enlightenment to modern society,but the politics of meritocracy also has its own limitations,so we need to critically look at the politics of meritocracy,take its essence and discard its dregs.
