Vocabulary learning strategies aid in improving the efficiency of vocabulary learning and increasing students’ initiative in vocabulary learning for senior high school students.The depth of vocabulary knowledge reflects the learners’ mastery of vocabulary knowledge.Revealing the relationship between vocabulary learning strategies and the depth of vocabulary knowledge is important for senior high school students to improve their vocabulary learning approaches and enhance the efficiency of vocabulary teaching.The purpose of this study is to investigate the correlation between English vocabulary learning strategies and depth of vocabulary knowledge among senior high school students.This study will answer the following three questions(1)What is the current situation of the use of vocabulary learning strategy of senior high school students?(2)What is the current situation of senior high school students’ level of the depth of vocabulary knowledge?(3)Is there a relationship between the use of vocabulary learning strategy and the depth of vocabulary knowledge? If so,what is the relationship?280 senior high school students of Grade 2 from Baoding participated in this study.This study adopted questionnaire,semi-structured interviews and the word associates test as the main research tools.By using SPSS to analyze the collected data,this study draws the following conclusions: 1.Senior high school students use cognitive strategies most frequently and used determination strategies and social strategies less frequently.2.Senior high school students’ mastery of depth of vocabulary knowledge is at middle-high level,but the level varies widely among students.Moreover,girls’ mastery of depth of vocabulary knowledge is better than boys’.3.There is a significant positive correlation between the use of vocabulary learning strategies and the depth of vocabulary knowledge.The depth of vocabulary knowledge and the five different types of vocabulary learning strategies had different degrees of correlation.The use of memory strategies,meta-cognitive strategies,cognitive strategies,and social strategies is significantly positively correlated with vocabulary knowledge depth,and the use of determination strategies is significantly low correlated with the depth of vocabulary knowledge.Based on the aforementioned results,this study makes some suggestions for improving the effectiveness of vocabulary learning and teaching in senior high schoolFirstly,students should learn to set rational vocabulary learning objectives that meet their own abilities,and actively use multiple learning resources around them to change their rote vocabulary memorization approach.When learning vocabulary,students should also focus on the multiple meanings and collocations of vocabulary.Teachers should promote the students’ mastery of the depth of vocabulary knowledge by guiding students to use appropriate vocabulary learning strategies.Creating a friendly learning atmosphere and setting up various vocabulary teaching activities to increase the frequency of students’ use of social and determination strategies are also essential.Teachers should also provide students with different learning contexts for students to strengthen the input and output of depth of vocabulary knowledge.Setting up cooperative and competitive learning activities of different levels for students with low depth of vocabulary knowledge are also crucial.
