An Analysis On Urban Novel Written By Jia Pingwa

Jia Pingwa is a famous contemporary writer in China.In addition to a series of popular novels about Shangzhou,his urban novels also have an important influence on contemporary literary.His five urban novels have a certain social significance and aesthetic value,showing the development of contemporary urban from multiple dimensions,revealing the problems of the city during the social transformation profoundly,and reflecting the spiritual trauma of the changing era.The research on his urban novels focuses on his single novel or from a single aspect,rather than the comprehensive analysis.This paper takes Jia Pingwa’s five urban novels as the research object,and makes a comprehensive analysis of his urban novels from four aspects: theme,characters,narrative strategies and creation concept.This paper is divided into four parts.Firstly,it focuses on the theme of urban novels.Jia Pingwa’s description of the city mainly includes two aspects: all kinds of disadvantages exposed by modernization and the impact of urbanization on the countryside;and the alienation of people’s spirit during the social transition.The author shows his doubts about modern urban civilization,which reflects the author’s awareness of problems and his views on the time.Secondly,this paper deeply analyzes the characters in his urban novels.The author shows the spitirs and quality of some people who lives in the city by describing the living conditions of intellectuals and women.Although his characters inevitably struggle,we can feel his humanistic feelings.He tried to provide new spiritual guidance for contemporary people to seek a breakthrough in the dilemma.In addition,the narrative characteristics of Jia Pingwa’s urban novels are also the focus of this article.This paper mainly starts with the narrative perspective and narrative structure to explore the inheritance and development of Jia Pingwa’s narrative method in Chinese and western literature.According to the needs of the plot,Jia Pingwa made many beneficial attempts.His works show the characteristics of diversified narrative strategies,which also highlight Jia Pingwa’s innovative consciousness in the novel narrative.Finally,this paper discusses Jia Pingwa’s views on urban and rural areas and on women,which makes a longitudinal investigation of his creative concept.His self-transcendence in creation concept is not only reflected in the urban-rural relationship from opposition to integration,but also in the awakening of female consciousness and repositioning of female image.Jia Pingwa’s acute discovery of social problems and profound disclosure of human nature make his urban novels have a unique value for the era.The diversification of narrative strategies and innovation of creative concepts also reflect the writer’s continuous transcendence and innovation in his creation.
