| As one of Thomas Mann’s representative works,The Magic Mountain has a huge volume and profound content,involving many fields such as politics,history,society,culture and so on.To a certain extent,it is the display of literary form after Thomas Mann’s profound thinking and summary of many western political thoughts and artistic ideas around the1900 s,and occupies an important position in the history of world literature.As the background where the story takes place and the place where the characters act,the space of "magic mountain" has an important impact on the cognition and behavior of characters.With the support of Foucault’s power theory,starts from the perspective of power and discipline,this paper comprehensively investigates the construction of power space,discipline mechanism and the way of characters resisting discipline in The Magic Mountain through close reading of the text,hoping to provide new understanding and discovery for the research of The Magic Mountain.The first chapter discusses the construction of power space in The Magic Mountain.In the comparison of the two lifestyles of "on the mountain" and "down the mountain" of "magic mountain",explore the root of the magic of "magic mountain" deeply,explore the discipline power behind it,and point out the organizational basis and disease atmosphere of the construction of the power field from the aspects of the architectural layout,institutional setting and convalescent environment of the sanatorium,so as to reveal the process in which patients are constantly iterpellated into the main body by the sanatorium community.The second chapter analyzes the forms of power discipline in The Magic Mountain.It is pointed out that the sanatorium has strictly intervened and controlled people in both physical and mental aspects through three means: technology,discipline and psychoanalysis.The medical technology represented by X-ray has confirmed the fact that patients are ill with its strong force.The discipline requirements such as body temperature measurement and lying down therapy have realized the transformation of patients from passive acceptance to self-discipline.Krokowski’s speech and spiritual analysis have further strengthened patients’ cognition of the disease and recognition of the community.The third chapter discusses the freedom and resistance under the discipline power in The Magic Mountain,which is mainly reflected in three aspects: humanitarianism,collective Carnival and romantic spirit.Firstly,the rites before death,such as the deathbed Eucharist,reflect not the sympathy and care of the hospital,but non-humanitarianism,Hans resisted it with humanitarian thinking and practice;Secondly,the collective Carnival of patients with lung disease is another significant resistance,but this way is still limited by the discipline of the hospital,showing the nothingness of freedom and the ineffectiveness of resistance;Finally,Hans’ s choice in the face of lust also reflects Thomas Mann’s reflection on Rationalism and his romantic spirit embodied in the characters.Combined with Foucault’s power theory,this paper makes a detailed interpretation of The Magic Mountain from the two levels of power discipline and resistance discipline,more comprehensively and objectively analyzes the characters in the work,and excavates the ideological and artistic essence of The Magic Mountain. |
