The Magic Mountain(Der Zauberberg)written by Thomas Mann in the early 20 th century,is a magnum opus in German literature. The novel tells that Hans Castorp,a college graduate who has lived in a nursing home for seven years, sees various people in it,including rational, optimistic humanitarians, jesuit priests with the zeal for asceticism, hedonists and physicians keen on psychoanalysis. They all try to influence the young hero with their own ideas.Ultimately,he realized that people should not let death rule themselves for the sake of good and love. Therefore,he got rid of the thought of waiting for death, left the nursing home, and embarked on the journey to the front. The novel depicts different time concepts between people living in the sanatorium on the mountain and people living outside the sanatorium, and the network of human relationships, showing confusion, stagnation, and hidden virtual space in the physical space of the sanatorium. It shows the crazy life of “magic” people living on “Magic Mountain”.By the awakening of the hero Hans' mind,we can look back at Thomas Man's rough experience, which inspires us to pay attention to the value and significance of life.
