Peace is one of the most important themes in the history of human development and has been the aspiration of mankind since ancient times. With nuclear weapons and the Cold War,peace became a luxury. The Non-Aligned Movement took shape in the early 1960 s.Against the background of the Cold War stalemate between the United States and the Soviet Union, the further development of the national liberation movement and the efforts of major non-aligned countries to pursue peace, the Non-Aligned Movement started its journey to safeguard world peace and took the maintenance of world peace as its mission and principle.Since the founding of the Non-Aligned Movement in September 1961,maintaining world peace had been a top priority during the Cold War.From 1961 to 1991,the Non-Aligned Movement experienced a long and tortuous process in safeguarding world peace.1961-1970 was the initial stage of the Non-Aligned Movement to maintain world peace. The Movement focused on coordinating conflicts between the United States and the Soviet Union and promoting the third world countries to obtain political independence. At this stage, the NAM coordinated with moderate means, solidarity over practice, and consolidated political independence.1970-1979 was the development stage of NAM to safeguard world peace.NAM hoped to consolidate political peace through economic development, pushed developing countries to establish a new international economic order, and settled internal disputes of NAM peacefully. At this stage, the Non-Aligned Movement diversified peacekeeping methods and tended to pursue economic liberation.Peacekeeping operations were more purposeful.1979-1991 was a slow period for the Non-Aligned Movement to maintain world peace. In this period, the Non-Aligned Movement coordinated regional conflicts, assisted member states, and linked peace with international law.At this stage, the Non-Aligned Movement was active but powerless. The scope of peacekeeping had expanded, but poor efficiency. The typical cases of NAM in maintaining world peace mainly include promoting nuclear disarmament and coordinating the Palestinian Issue, which basically ran through the movement’s efforts to maintain world peace during the Cold War.This cases reflected its measures in easing international tensions and coordinating regional conflicts, and presented the movement’s overall appearance in maintaining world peace. The Non-Aligned Movement promoted nuclear disarmament through four aspects: calling for nuclear disarmament, advocating peaceful uses of nuclear energy, assisting the United Nations in holding disarmament conferences and participating in the formulation of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. On the coordination of the Palestinian Issue, the Non-Aligned Movement issued relevant documents to support the Palestinian people, set up special agencies to consult on the Palestinian Issue, and strengthened cooperation with the United Nations to solve the settlement issue. The Non-Aligned Movement had important impacts on maintaining world peace. It eased international tensions during the Cold War.It consolidated third world political independence and accelerated the process of decolonization;Promoted third world economic development and improved economic conditions. In addition,it had enhanced the NAM’s international influence and increased its member states. Its voice in the United Nations had been enhanced, and its cohesion and appeal in the Third World had been greatly enhanced.
