Intimate Relationship is a relationship between two people who are very close, interdependent, supportive and trusting.Such relationships can be between lovers, couples, close friends,or relatives.Close relationships are based on mutual understanding, respect and trust and require constant efforts by both parties to preserve and strengthen them. However, sometimes a close relationship may Breakup(break up).Breakup is the process by which one or both of two people end their relationship.Breakups can occur for many reasons, such as poor communication, different needs and expectations, mutual distrust, personality differences, and so on.Regardless of the reason, breaking up is often a very painful process that requires both parties to experience emotional grief and loss.As an important group in the society, college students have just entered a relatively relaxed university life environment from the high-pressure environment of high school, and are also in the early adult stage mentioned by Erikson.Their main task is to obtain intimate relationships and learn to love and be loved. It can be said that they have little experience in dealing with intimate relationships. It is easy to fall into negative emotions, which will have a considerable negative impact on life, study and physical and mental health. In recent years, emotional problems involving breakup are common problems in psychological counseling work in colleges and universities. Therefore, from the perspective of promoting the development of physical and mental health of college students,it is necessary to conduct in-depth research on the problems related to college students’ breakup.A breakup can be a serious emotional trauma, but it can also be an opportunity to grow as a person.First of all,a breakup can make a person feel very lonely and a little discomfiting, but many people have learned to rely on the support of friends and family to get through this difficult time in this situation.Second, breaking up can also make people more aware of their own needs and values, help them better understand their strengths and weaknesses, and then more clearly define their life goals and aspirations. In addition, breakups can be an opportunity for a person to open up to new challenges and experiences, helping them become more confident and adventurous.Overall, while breaking up can cause pain and hurt,it can also be an important milestone for a person to grow and become stronger. At present, there are few studies on the growth of college students after breaking up,and they are not deep enough. Most of the domestic studies are limited to the exploration of the influencing factors of college students’ growth after breaking up,or the interview research on a small number of lovelorn college students, which has certain limitations. This study aims to explore the influencing factors of post-breakup growth and its influencing mechanism through qualitative research and questionnaire survey, and then to verify the results of qualitative research and questionnaire survey through intervention experiments,so as to provide theoretical support and practical reference for mental health education and crisis intervention in colleges and universities. In study 1,semi-structured interviews were conducted with five college students who had experienced a painful breakup.According to the proposed interview outline,one-onone in-depth interviews were conducted with the respondents, and then the interview recordings were transcribed into verbatim manuscripts. Then, the influencing factors of lovelorn college students’ growth after breaking up were obtained. The results showed that social support, psychological resilience and rumination played a key role in the post-breakup growth of lovelorn college students, and a preliminary model of post-breakup growth was constructed.Study 2 conducted a questionnaire survey on 177 college students who had experienced a painful breakup to further explore the effects of social support, resilience and rumination on growth after a breakup. The results showed that resilience had a complete mediating effect on social support and post-breakup growth, and rumination played a moderating role between social support and resilience. On the basis of Study I and Study II,Study III aimed to explore the post-breakup growth process of college students and the role of rumination in this process, and to verify the possibility of enhancing post-breakup growth by enhancing rumination.Thirty college students who had recently experienced a breakup participated in this experiment and were randomly divided into experimental group and control group. In the experimental group, participants used expressive writing and cognitive reappraisal tasks to record their experiences and perceptions of the day, while the control group completed a daily diary task. The intervention experiment lasted for one week. Before and after the intervention, the level of rumination and the level of growth after breaking up were measured by questionnaires. The results showed that the level of rumination and post-breakup growth of the experimental group were significantly improved, while the control group had no significant change in rumination and post-breakup growth.Studies have shown that expressive writing and cognitive reappraisal intervention can effectively improve the level of rumination of college students and play a positive role in the growth process after breakup. In summary, this study draws the following conclusions:(1)College students may experience negative emotional and physiological reactions after a breakup, which may affect their life and study.(2)College students with high social support were more likely to adopt positive coping styles to cope with the trauma and stress caused by the breakup than those with low social support.(3)College students will have five specific growth performance after breaking up.(4)College students who are good at rumination are more likely to grow after a breakup.(5)Social support and resilience have a positive impact on post-breakup growth, and rumination plays an important role in it.(6)Expressive writing and cognitive reappraisal can improve rumination and post-breakup growth of college students. This study is the first time to use quantitative research, qualitative research and intervention research to explore the influencing factors of post-breakup growth, which provides new materials for the development of mental health education, and has certain practical guiding significance for the intervention and psychological counseling of college students after the breakup.
