This paper focuses on the study of sound imagery in the poetry of Lu You.It examines the basic types of sound imagery found in Lu You’s poetry and specifically selects three representative sound imageries: the sound of cicadas,the sound of pine wind,and the sound of bells.The paper elucidates the artistic characteristics and emotional connotations of sound imagery in Lu You’s poetry,revealing the evocative qualities conveyed through sound imagery at different stages of his life.The paper is divided into four parts:Chapter one provides a brief overview of the basic types and characteristics of sound imagery in Lu You’s poetry.It comprehensively surveys all of Lu You’s poetic works and classifies and explains the various sound imageries employed by Lu You.Lu You often integrates multiple senses in his depictions of sound imagery and demonstrates a talent for systematic integration of sound imagery.The chapter concludes by highlighting the uniqueness of the sound imageries of cicadas,pine wind,and bells in Lu You’s poetry.Chapter two explores the reconstruction and sublimation of the cicada sound imagery in Lu You’s poetry.By tracing the origins of cicada sound imagery and understanding its historical transformations in previous works,the chapter analyzes the construction and presentation of cicada sound imagery in Lu You’s poetry.Lu You’s depiction of the cicada sound imagery reflects the evolution of his thoughts and emotions.His portrayal emphasizes sensory connections,rhythmic qualities,and the creation of soundscapes,combining the cicada sound imagery with observed scenes and inner feelings.Lu You’s usage breaks away from the symbolic conventions of previous cicada sound imagery,presenting a new facet of cicada sound imagery in his poetry.Chapter three discusses the presentation modes and multiple implications of pine wind imagery in Lu You’s poetry.By exploring the evolution of pine wind imagery during the Tang and Song dynasties,the chapter focuses on different contexts and combinations of imagery to examine Lu You’s perception of the pine wind and the ambiance he creates through it.By analyzing Lu You’s descriptions of the sound of the pine wind in various emotional states,the chapter reveals the transformation of Lu You’s worldview from contradictions to a balanced perspective.Chapter four delves into the inheritance and development of bell sound imagery in Lu You’s poetry.Using the religious and timekeeping functions of ancient bells as a clue,the chapter surveys the historical changes in bell sound imagery and analyzes the aesthetic and emotional implications contained in different types of bell sounds found in Lu You’s poetry.Lastly,the chapter explores Lu You’s expansion of the poetic realm and philosophical insights through the bell sound imagery.The study of sound imagery in poetry provides a new approach to interpreting poetry,enabling us to perceive a multidimensional and audible world.This research contributes to the exploration of imagery in ancient poetry and enriches our understanding of Lu You’s poetry.
