Washback refers to the impact of testing on language learning and teaching.For Chinese learner,HSK Level 6 exam have an important place on their studies and the reading section is one of the most important for the students,therefore,study the washback of this section it’s really important.In addition,the scope of research on the washback effect is currently limited to large English exams,and this study hopes to fill the gap in the washback effect of the HSK.Therefore,this study was guided by the theory of washback effect,with the help of questionnaires,interviews and classroom observations,and was conducted with international students who were preparing to take the New HSK Level 6 exam and Chinese teachers who were teaching international students at Southwest University International College.The study focuses on student learning and teacher teaching.The results of the study indicates the new HSK Level 6 reading test had an impact on students’ learning and teachers’ teaching,and the impact on students’ learning was significantly higher than that on teachers’ teaching,and the overall effect on both was more positive than negative.Finally,in order to make better use of the positive influence of the HSK Level 6 reading test and to enable better development of Chinese language teaching and learning,the author makes suggestions to students,teachers,testers,and schools based on the research results.
