The Pictorial series of Current Events Newspaper is attached to the Current Events Newspaper,which was founded in Shanghai in 1907.It was composed of Picture News of Current Events Newspaper,Wushen Pictorial,Picture of Current Events Newspaper(January to March 1909),Picture of Public Opinion Current Events Newspaper and Picture of Current Events Newspaper(September 1910),and has a successive relationship in time.About 8 pictures in each issue of the series were different from each other in different titles,but the columns of "Picture News" were retained in each issue,about 4 of them.This paper took 314 reports of police in the late Qing Dynasty as the research text and analyzed how the Pictorial series of Current Events Newspaper(1907-1910)reported police in Late Qing Dynasty under the New Deal by means of literature research and text analysis.Based on Roland Barthes semiotics theory and Han Cong Yao’s image news research method,this paper analyzed 314 police picture reports to explore the deep meaning of police images in the late Qing Dynasty.This article mentality is as follows:The first part sorted out the development course of the Pictorial series of Current Events Newspaper and the establishment of the police system in the late Qing Dynasty.This part mainly introduces the establishment of the pictorial,including the background,the succession and the characteristics of the pictorial.It also clarifies the background and the process of the establishment of the police system.The second part analyzed the contents of the report of the police in the late Qing Dynasty of the Pictorial series of Current Events Newspaper.The contents of police in the late Qing Dynasty could be divided into four categories: the social functions of police in the late Qing Dynasty,including arrest and censorship,prohibition of smoking,gambling,prohibition of adultery,breaking superstition and rescue and relief,corruption of police in the late Qing Dynasty,including abuse of power,collusion with bandits,prostitution,gambling,neglect of duty,occupation and living conditions of patrolmen in the late Qing Dynasty and vocational education.The third part explored the different images of police in the Late Qing Dynasty of the Pictorial series of Current Events Newspaper.Through the analysis of a large number of historical materials and literature,combined with the background of the times,this paper investigates the causes of different police images presented by pictorial.The fourth part discussed the narrative characteristics and value of police reports in the late Qing Dynasty in the Pictorial series of Current Events Newspaper.Using the theory of semiotics,this paper analyzes the visual rhetoric of police’s picture-picture report,and discursive function of words in the reportThrough the analysis of the police in the late Qing Dynasty reported in the Pictorial series of Current Events Newspaper,we can find that the police in the late Qing Dynasty,as the representatives of state power,were given higher expectations by the government and the people,and presented a positive image in the pictorial as a whole.But because of the influence of many factors,the police showed contrary to the social ideal.The portrayal of the police in the late Qing Dynasty helped to strengthen the understanding of the police reform among the people,helped them to understand the public security modernization and promoted the smooth implementation of the reform among the people. |
