Research On The Column Picture Of Current Events News In Picture Daily (1909-1910) From The Perspective Of Frame Theory

Picture Daily is the first pictorial journal in China,which has played an important role in the history of image news communication due to the sales volume of nearly 10000 copies per issue.In this paper,it puts the cultural framework throughout the study and study the communicator framework and text framework of the column Picture of Current Events News from the perspective of frame theory to obtain the column framework and its construction characteristics,which is helpful to understand the historical features of modern picture journalism and the characteristics of pictorial journalism in the late Qing Dynasty.The disseminator framework analysis of this column is divided into organizational framework and individual framework.Organizational framework refers to the media position that the editorial team prefers the sensational social news and the purpose of running the journal "Opening up social customs and morale,and increasing national people’s wisdom and knowledge",and personal frame refers to the commercial and popular news values of professional painters and unconventional and unrestrained authors.The text frame analyzes the characteristics of pictures and text by analyzing the topic frame of the column,which is mainly social supplemented by political education,and the narrative frame,which is mainly pictures supplemented by words.Finally,it summarizes the theme framework of this column,which mainly includes “Welcome kitsch and consolidate men’s rights;Expose corruption and supervise current affairs;Criticize ignorance and break superstition;Advocate new knowledge and enlighten people’s wisdom”.The narrative strategy of words includes the narration of current events and plots,the title of antithesis,concise language,clear structure and exhortation at the end of the text.The narrative strategy of pictures is to construct a frame by using the spatial extension and metaphorical function of pictures.The column Picture of Current Events News in Picture Daily(1909-1910)is a typical successful case of modern image news communication,the news framework and rules of which can be used for reference for modern image news communication.
