This report is based on the practice of English-Chinese translation of the academic paper Sino-Indian Security Predicaments for the Twenty-First Century(the main part),by David Scott,a scholar at School of International Relations,Brunel University,UK.Since the text belongs to the category of international relations, and the translator is more interested in and specialized in this field, priority was given to texts related to international relations in the text selection process.Focusing on the geopolitical perspective in international relations, what is revealed in this paper is that China-India relations have ushered in a rare opportunity for development after entering the 21 st century, along with the challenges of a variety of security dilemmas such as territorial disputes, nuclear arms race, trade and energy issues.By citing the views of many scholars and politicians, the author provides an objective analysis of the current situation and the future direction in Sino-Indian relations. The source text belongs to the category of international relations, with formal language, strong logic and frequent complex sentences.Due to the more obvious logical nature of wording and chapter layout in the text,it poses certain translation difficulties to the translators. Therefore, under the guidance of the three principles of skopos theory and combined with the analysis of typical cases, logical reproduction issues in source texts are discussed in this translation practice report, and corresponding countermeasures to solve the translation problems are summarized. The logical reproduction problems encountered by the translator in the translation process are mainly reflected in three levels: vocabulary, complex sentences, and sentence groups. The translator analyzes and discusses from the above three levels by combining specific cases and using the knowledge related to logic, and then summarizes the corresponding translation strategies and translation methods. At the lexical level, the logicality is reproduced by determining the conceptual connotation of words and selecting the conceptual extension of the word meanings;at the sentence level,on the basis of accurately conveying the information of the original text, and to make the translation more consistent with the Chinese expression habits, the translator uses translation techniques such as splitting and reconstructing to logically reconstruct complex sentences so as to reproduce the logicality of the original text;at the sentence group level, the logicality is reproduced by analyzing the logical relations in the original text and adding or reducing logical conjunctions. The translation practice not only enhanced the translator’s knowledge of international relations-related fields, but also improved the translator’s comprehension, expression and logical reasoning ability,as well as mastered the translation methods of discourse texts;this translation practice has enabled the translators to have a deeper understanding of the characteristics of international relations texts, and at the same time to make a practical summary of the logical reproduction of international relations texts, thus accumulating translation experience in related field texts.
