The Intellectual Virtue From The Perspective Of Science And Technology Ethics

With the development of emerging science and technology,new ethical issues of science and technology have become increasingly prominent,and present characteristics of complexity and concealment.In order to promote science and technology for the good and benefit of mankind and to achieve a high level of scientific and technological self-reliance and self-improvement,China issued the Opinions on Strengthening Ethical Governance of Science and Technology,which on the one hand indicates the direction and goal for the current research on ethics of science and technology,and on the other hand means that ethics of science and technology has entered a new stage,which requires a new perspective and a new approach to the research on ethics of science and technology.This research perspective puts intellectual virtue under the threshold of science and technology ethics,or introduces the dimension of intellectual virtue to science and technology ethics,analyzes the causes of science and technology ethical problems from the perspective of intellectual virtue,and proposes practical solutions.On the one hand,this can enrich the study of ethics of science and technology,and on the other hand,it can give new life and vitality to the ancient concept of intellectual virtue,which originated from Aristotle.Analyzed from the perspective of intellectual virtue,the reason why the ethical problems of science and technology have proliferated is because of the lack of virtue in human intellect,which in turn has led to human nature being lost in blind intellect.Aristotle divides virtue into moral virtue and intellectual virtue,and it is generally believed that moral virtue pursues goodness and intellectual virtue pursues truth,while the intellectual virtue of the ethics of science and technology is actually a spiritual character of unity of truth and goodness.The purpose of human invention and application of science and technology is to realize the highest good and promote human welfare,and the ethics of science and technology emerges to realize the highest good to the greatest extent.There is an inherent tension between science and technology and ethics in science and technology ethics,and science and technology ethics pursue the unity of truth and goodness,breakthrough and balance,which together support the value of science and technology ethics in the pursuit of human goodness.Intellectual virtue is the virtue of truth-seeking,but intellect must eventually be externalized into practical activities,so intellectual virtue is also the pursuit of truth and goodness.Thus,science and technology are the realization of intellect,science and technology activities are the practice of intellect,and ethics of science and technology is the application of intellectual virtue.Regarding the practice of intellectual virtue in the context of ethics of science and technology,it is necessary to clarify the value of intellectual virtue.First of all,intellectual virtue is the quality of seeking truth,which is universal and eternal,the same for everyone,and therefore equal.Secondly,the pursuit of truth by intellectual virtue is completely non-utilitarian,unrestrained by other things,and therefore free.Furthermore,the pursuit of truth by human intellect enables human beings to be distinguished from nature and thus to acquire human dignity.Freedom,equality,and dignity are all important elements of human welfare,and therefore,human welfare becomes the value of intellectual virtue.Intellectual virtue in the context of ethics of science and technology is a virtue quality of unity of knowledge and action,because intellectual virtue in practice possesses both truth-seeking and good-seeking qualities,and its value pursuit is the unity of truth and goodness,and the good-seeking is based on truth-seeking and the truth-seeking is aimed at good-seeking,and this unity of truth and goodness is expressed in practice as the unity of knowledge and action.In addition,combined with the current theory and practice of ethical governance of science and technology,intellectual virtue and wisdom in the threshold of ethics of science and technology also requires a certain operation mechanism,namely,multiparty collaborative governance,whole process governance and responsible innovation.Ethics of science and technology is related to the development and application of science and technology,moreover,it is related to the fate and future of human beings,and the study of ethics of science and technology is ultimately aimed at ensuring the highest good for human beings.The study of ethics of science and technology is ultimately aimed at ensuring the highest goodness of human beings.By incorporating intellectual virtue into the ethical vision of science and technology,we seek the foundation of intellectual virtue for ethics of science and technology and the connotation of ethics of science and technology.It can clarify many theoretical problems embedded in the ethical governance of science and technology,and clarify the value pursuit of ethics of science and technology and intellectual virtue,which is of great practical significance for solving the current ethical problems of science and technology.
