| Enantiosemy verbs are words that co-occur and exist on the same linguistic plane yet have two opposing meanings. This paper takes 246 enantiosemy verbs in Xu Shirong’s the Explanation for the Collection of Enantiosemy Words in Ancient Chinese as the object of study.Using the qualitative-quantitative-qualitative research method,a total of39 enantiosemy verbs were screened, characterised and categorised according to the new definition criteria. On the basis of it,the reasons for their production are analyzed from a cognitive perspective. In order to gain a thorough and organized understanding of enantiosemy verbs,we have additionally linked 18 antonymic cognates and investigated the shifting tendencies of these verbs from a developmental perspective. The first chapter is the introductory part, describing the current status of the study of enantiosemy verbs and the Explanation for the Collection of Enantiosemy Words in Ancient Chinese,as well as introducing the significance of this paper and its research methodology.Chapters 2 through 6 make up the major text, which is the second section.According to the definition and screening criteria for enantiosemy verbs, the second chapter is devoted to screening and counting the 246 enantiosemy verbs in the book, and finally 39 enantiosemy verbs that fit the criteria are screened out to clarify the research objects of anti-training verbs. The third chapter describes the characteristics and classifies of them.According to the causes of their formation, the verbs are divided into three categories: enantiosemy verbs for granting and receiving(15),enantiosemy verbs for existing and dyin(18),and enantiosemy verbs for positive and negative(6).The forth chapter analyses the formation mechanism of enantiosemy verbs from a cognitive linguistic perspective. It applies imagery schema theory, prototype category theory, event domain cognitive model theory and metonymy theory to analyse the causes of the three classes of them, and provides a cognitive basis for the formation of enantiosemy verbs. The fifth chapter is concerned with connecting antonymic cognates in enantiosemy verbs.A total of 18 antonymic cognates are linked and classified into two categories:opposing cognates and grant-receive cognates. The sixth chapter examines the development of enantiosemy verb. There are three conditions for the evolution of these verbs: firstly, they died out in Chinese development history;secondly, they persisted in Chinese due to their peculiarity;and thirdly, they have been added to contemporary Chinese. The final section,Chapter 7,is the concluding section. It summarises the main contents of this paper and points out the limitations of the current research. |
