In recent years, the rapid increase in population and the intensive exploitation of resources worldwide have led to ecological degradation. The environmental problems, such as desertification and soil erosion, have plunged mankind into an ecological dilemma. For this reason, ecological restoration activities of different scales and forms have emerged worldwide, and the practical needs have made the study of restoration ecology one of the current focuses in ecological research at home and abroad. The book,Restoration Ecology: The New Frontier aims to integrate the concepts of restoration ecology with practical ecological restoration work by explaining relevant concepts and analyzing relevant case studies to explore how existing ecological knowledge and models can be applied to practical ecological restoration work. The book also introduces some of the basic concepts of restoration ecology and explores their potential applicability to ecosystems such as landscapes and communities. In view of the fact that there is no translation of this book in China, the translator selected this book as the source text of the translation project.Through the translation of the second and third chapters of the book and the application of Newmark’s theory of communicative translation, this report focuses on the issues that need to be taken into account in the E-C translation of ecological texts. There are many proper nouns and terms in Restoration Ecology: The New Frontier and the sentence patterns are more complex.According to Newmark’s classification of the text, the book is an informative text. The translation of this book based on Newmark’s communicative translation theory can not only improve the accuracy of information transmission, but also ensure that the sentences are smooth, easy to understand and readable,so that the translation can achieve the same effect as the source text.Guided by Newmark’s communicative translation theory, this report makes a specific analysis of translation cases from the lexical and syntactic levels.Firstly,at the lexical level, the translator combined translation skills such as amplification, annotation and extension to make the translation more fluent, authentic and easy to understand.Secondly,at the syntactic level, the translator adapted the translation to the reading needs of the target language readers through translation skills such as division, omission, class shift, adjustment of sentence order and voice conversion.By applying Newmark’s communicative translation theory to the translation of ecological texts, the understanding of the difficulties and strategies in the E-C translation of ecological texts can be deepened. It can also provide a reference for the translation of ecological texts in China. |
