A Report On The E-C Translation Of Film: A Critical Introduction (Excerpts)

In the era of globalization,frequent cultural exchanges between nations always go along with the process of cultural input and output,during which academic translation plays an ever more significant role.Nowadays,with frequent academic exchanges,there is a growing demand for academic translation.So,many western academic works have been translated into China,which greatly promotes its academic development.Film: A Critical Introduction is an academic book on film research,which is characterized by the accuracy,logicality and objectivity of the text,and the use of a large number of film terms,common words with special meanings,complex syntactic structure and so on.So far,there is no translation version of Film: A Critical Introduction in China,once translated into Chinese,it can not only improve the readers’ film appreciation level,but also promote the exchange of film research.This report selected three chapters in Film: A Critical Introduction as translation materials.Under the theoretical guidance of Skopos theory and in combination with its three principles,this paper made a detailed analysis and discussion of the selected translated text at the lexical level and syntactical level,and gave corresponding translation strategies and methods for the problems encountered in the process of the translation practice.In view of the difficulties and issues in vocabulary translation,such as film terms and common words with special meanings,the translation methods such as shift,omission,literal translation,and annotation were adopted,so as to make the target readers have the same reading experience as the source text readers.At the syntactic level,the translator applied such translation methods as conversion,division,inversion,restructuring and omission to deal with the translation of passive voice and long sentences,so as to make the translation text conform to the Chinese expression habits to the maximum extent and reduce the reading obstacles.Guided by Skopos theory,this report studies the translation of the film research texts,and puts forward effective solutions to the problems in the translation of film research texts.By carrying out this translation research,the translator hopes to provide reference for the translation of film research texts and enrich the study of academic translation.
