| Cooperation refers to the cooperative behavior between individuals or groups in order to realize the common interests of society.Social dilemma refers to the conflict between individual interests and collective interests, which can be solved through cooperation.Researchers have done a lot of research on cooperation in social dilemmas and found that power motivation is one of the factors affecting cooperation in a social dilemma. However, the influence of power motivation on cooperation in social dilemmas is controversial. In social communication, individuals have a desire or drive to influence others or the surrounding environment, which is the power motive.Earlier studies have found that individuals with high power motive like competition, value personal reputation, strive for higher status, and are less willing to cooperate with others.Studies in recent years have found that when people act prosocial or altruistic, they can win a good reputation and status, and high power motive can increase cooperation. All these studies have relatively ignored the question of which factors cause the different behaviors of high-power motivators in social dilemmas. From the perspective of individual environment interaction, this study attempts to combine environmental factors(eye cues)with personal factors(self-construal)to investigate the impact of power motive on cooperation in the dilemma of public goods and its internal mechanism. It consists of two studies:Study 1 adopted a 2(power motive: high/low)× 2(eye cues: yes/no)hybrid design to explore the impact of high/low power motivation on cooperation in social dilemmas under eye cues.In Study 1,using the paradigm of public goods dilemma and presenting eye cues,100 college students(39 males,61 females, half high / low power motive)were selected to complete the experiment.Study 2 adopted a 2(power motive: high/low)× 2(eye cues: yes/no)× 2(self-construal:independence/interdependence)hybrid design aims to investigate the role of self-construal in the cooperation of eye cues and power motive in a social dilemma. In Study 2,120 college students(44 males,76 females, half high / low power motive)were selected to activate the subjects’ independent self-construal and interdependent self-construal and complete the public goods dilemma task with or without eye cues. The results show that:(1)in the dilemma of public goods, there are significant differences in the level of individual cooperation with high/low power motive, and the level of cooperation of college students with high power motive is higher.(2)Eye cues affect the effect of power motivation on cooperation.Under eye cues, the cooperation level of high power motive is higher than that of low power motive; In the cloud picture(without eye cues),there was no significant difference in the cooperation level of high/low power motive.(3)Self-construal regulates the influence of eye cues and power motive on cooperation. When activating independent self-construal,there is no significant difference in the cooperation level of high/low power motive under eye cues, but there is a significant difference in the cooperation level of high/low power motive when activating interdependent self-construal.This study reveals the characteristics of individual cooperation with high/low power motive and finds that power motive promotes cooperation. At the same time, starting from the environmental and personal factors, this paper discusses the mechanism of the influence of power motive on cooperation and finds that the positive role of power motive is further amplified when the eye cue exists, while the role of eye cue is weakened when the independent self-construal is activated, which proves that the influence of power motive on cooperation is the result of the joint action of environment and individual. The results provide strong support for further understanding the impact of power motive on cooperation and suggest that we should be good at applying the positive role of power motive in the process of organization and management. |
