Ancient literature is an important manifestation of traditional Chinese culture,and traditional Chinese culture is a substantial expression of the spirit of the Chinese nation,which is not only the crystallisation of our ancestors’ wisdom,but also a precious heritage with cultural connotations and the spirit of the times that our future generations should pass on and carry forward.The literary work Xu Xiake’s Travels is a great prose travelogue,which brings together the lifelong travels of the great traveller Xu Xiake in chronological order,with the road as the outline and the scenery as the description.The book is rich in content,such as scenic spots,customs,historical background and legends,and the writing in the Travels is authentic and simple.The book is both scientifically true and artistically sophisticated,with a rich and varied geography and history listed in each specific geographical setting,creating a wonderful and beautiful picture that follows the author’s travels,one step at a time,and thus fascinating.In today’s society,it is not enough to rely on traditional forms of communication,such as books,for the dissemination and promotion of traditional literary works.It is not only unable to meet the needs of consumers in the context of the rapid development of technology,but also unable to expand the dissemination of traditional literary works.Modern illustration,as a product of the rapid development of digitalisation and technology,has incomparable advantages,such as strong reproducibility and fast dissemination,and it is these advantages that have made modern illustration a popular form of visual communication in today’s society.This project is based on the "Travels of Xu Xiake",and the content of his prose is analysed,summarised and summarised in depth,and created using modern illustration as a form of artistic expression.The aim is to broaden the scope and increase the channels of dissemination of traditional literature,thus contributing to the development of traditional Chinese culture.The introductory section provides a deep theoretical foundation for the research that follows.The aesthetic characteristics of modern illustration are discussed and examples of outstanding works are cited,which are then applied to the creation of the illustrations in this project.The problems in the illustrations of Xu Xiake’s Travels are discussed in paragraphs,reflecting the need for innovation in the creation of illustrations for this project.A questionnaire survey is used to understand the acceptance and use of literary illustrations by the target group and to develop reasonable solutions based on the results of the survey questions.The painting categories of the subject content are elaborated in sections:imaginative modelling elements,picture mood,and subject content,and the content in these painting categories is based on the interpretation of specific phrases and passages in the Travels.The next step is to sort through the whole of Xu Xiake’s Travels and select and refine the passages and the elements of painting required in the creation of subsequent illustrations.On the basis of the above research,we fully understand the common illustration styles on the market,and according to the artistic characteristics and expressions of their illustration styles,we choose Chinese ancient style illustration as the style of illustration creation for this subject.The process of creating the characters,the composition of the picture,the colours of the picture and the use of brushes are elaborated.According to the characteristics of the subject,the products applied in Xu Xiake’s Travels are divided into three scenes and a more detailed discussion ensues.
