Peer mobile phone neglect,a phenomenon in which individuals focus on their mobile phones to the exclusion of their peers in social settings,is a very common phenomenon today. As a form of neglectful social exclusion,it often has a range of negative consequences for adolescents. For example, the quality of interpersonal interactions between the two parties in adolescent interaction situations, and the internalisation of the left out person. This study focuses on the impact of peer mobile phone neglect on adolescents’ self-evaluation.Positive self-evaluation is not only an important mental strength for individuals to achieve success and accomplishments, but also an important manifestation for adapting to society and maintaining psychological health, and it is important to form positive self-evaluation during adolescence.Self-esteem,as an important psychological mechanism for regulating the relationship between people and their environment, may have a buffering role in the effect of peer mobile phone chilling behaviour on adolescents’ low self-evaluation.The study not only enriches theoretical research in the field of mobile phone neglect behaviour, but also further expands and complements the factors influencing adolescents’ self-evaluation;in addition,it has important practical significance and application value in reducing the occurrence of adolescents’ low self-evaluation and mitigating the adverse effects.Through the research on the relationship between peer mobile phone snubbing behaviour and adolescents’ self-evaluation,it is found that there are three main problems with the current research: firstly, although secondary schools currently do not allow secondary school students to carry mobile phones,at a time when there are191 million underage Internet users in China, the "absence of peer mobile phone snubbing situations" is not a reality Secondly, there are relatively few studies on the impact of mobile phone snubbing on adolescents’ self-evaluation;finally,the possible buffering mechanisms of individual self-evaluation are not sufficiently explored. The role of self-esteem as a moderator of personality traits has been demonstrated in previous studies, but few studies have explored the buffering role of self-esteem in peer mobile phone apathy on adolescents’ low self-evaluation.Based on these shortcomings, the present study aims to reveal the effects of peer mobile phone neglect on adolescents’ self-evaluation and whether self-esteem as a personality trait plays a buffering role in this regard through two progressive experiments.Specifically,Study 1 aimed to examine whether the mobile phone cold shoulder situation could induce feelings of being left out and the effect of peer mobile phone cold shoulder behaviour on adolescents’ self-evaluation;Study 2 further explored the buffering effect of self-esteem on adolescents’ low self-evaluation based on Study 1.The main findings are as follows:(1)Peer mobile phone chilling behaviour can induce feelings of being left out among adolescents and the mobile phone chilling situation setting is effective.(2)Compared to those who were not left out by peers’ mobile phones, adolescents’ self-evaluation levels were significantly lower overall in the mobile phone left-out scenario, especially on optimism, humour, extraversion and indispensability.(3)Self-esteem levels had an impact on adolescents’ self-evaluation,with adolescents in the high self-esteem group scoring significantly higher than those in the low self-esteem group.(4)Self-esteem does not have a buffering effect on adolescents’ self-evaluation when they are left out by their peers’ mobile phones.Based on the above findings, this study proposes targeted educational countermeasures from four aspects: family, school, society and adolescents themselves.
