The illustrations of Jinling editions in the late Ming Dynasty were born out of white drawing modeling,created by woodcut prints and relying on the text of books as the carrier of communication.It is not only a kind of image art with strong traditional Chinese aesthetics,but also a kind of innovative composite creation.After combing and integrating a large number of literature materials,it is found that the current research on publishing illustrations mainly focuses on the theoretical analysis in the field of semiotics,iconography and literature,and there is a lack of research and analysis on the visual art and design methods in publishing illustrations.This paper focuses on the analysis of the unique visual expression and artistic characteristics of the illustrations of Jinling publications in the late Ming Dynasty from the perspective of art design,combined with the time and regional background to analyze the generating factors of the visual language of the illustrations of Jinling publications in the late Ming Dynasty and the design thoughts and cultural connotations behind it.Exploring innovative ideas of traditional Chinese art creation in the context of modern society provides a path and reference for the visual design methods of Jinling illustrations in the late Ming Dynasty.Jinling illustrations in the late Ming Dynasty have a strong attribute of The Times and regional characteristics.Combing through its development vein,it can be seen that the prosperity of Jinling illustrations in the late Ming Dynasty cannot be separated from the promotion of social economy,cultural environment and applied technology: The prosperous commodity economy and handicraft industry in the Ming Dynasty not only gave birth to the germination of capitalism but also promoted the formation of large gathering towns.The prosperous Jiangnan area,relying on the developed land and water transportation,siphoned the excellent painters and carvers and literati in the surrounding areas,which provided the economic and market foundation for the development of Jinling illustrated books.The active literary phenomena and artistic ecology of the same period provided rich creative content for the illustrations of Jinling editions in the late Ming dynasty,from opera operas to legendary novels.This not only satisfied the recreational activities of the civic class but also provided fertile soil for literary creation.At that time,the publishing industry in Jinling was gradually subdivided under the selection of the market.Tang’s bookstore,headed by Fuchun Tang,mainly published and engraved songs,while Wan Scroll Building,operated by Zhou’s,focused on the field of fiction legends.Secondly,taking the visual schema of the illustrations of Jinling editions in the late Ming Dynasty as the research object,the evolution characteristics of artistic expression in the illustrations of Jinling editions from Wanli period to Chongzhen period in the Ming Dynasty as the context of time,and the dependency between visual images and text content in the illustrations of Jinling editions in the late Ming Dynasty were explored from three dimensions of layout,composition and line modeling.By clarifying the development and evolution of the images in the illustrations of Jinling in the late Ming Dynasty and summarizing and sorting out the various visual schema features,this paper provides inspiration for the future visual design innovation with the aesthetics and characteristics of Chinese native art.Thirdly,the paper focuses on the rich visual language and image representation in the illustrations of Jinling editions in the late Ming Dynasty,and analyzes the causes of visual representation in the illustrations from three perspectives: creative tools and techniques,shaping forms and expressions,and creative thoughts and connotations.Based on the development course of Jinling illustrations in the late Ming Dynasty,the functions carried by the illustrations in different periods are summarized as follows: the early "costume dressing and reference function",the middle "literati tendency and decoration function" and the late "pursuit of decoration and collection function".From the outside to the inside,the paper explores the functional value and cultural value of Jinling illustrations in the late Ming Dynasty.Finally,based on the summary of the visual language and artistic features of the illustrations of Jinling editions in the late Ming Dynasty and the analysis of the design and application status of woodcut prints,the unique image elements and visual symbols are extracted from the illustrations of the editions,and the brand of "Fireworks March" Yangzhou Spring Tourism Festival and related visual images are created by combining modern innovative design methods.Including brand name,logo,color and other basic systems as well as related brand image application expansion,strengthen the regional characteristics of local brands to build both traditional aesthetics and modern aesthetic tourism culture brand.
