Mary Stevenson Cassatt is an outstanding female artist in the United States from the end of the 19 th century to the beginning of the 20 th century,and one of the representative artists of Impressionism.Her works of mother and son were of one of the most prominent themes,which added an important brush for the development of modern art.Cassatt’s mother-child oil paintings have rigorous and stable composition and soft and bright colors.Her painting style is not only reflected in the technical level,but also most distinctive in her unique way of observation and delicate emotion,which shows the artistic characteristics of warmth and simplicity,and expresses the unique emotion and spiritual world between mother and child.This paper starts with Cassatt’s oil paintings of mother and child themes and makes an in-depth study of them from four parts.Firstly,the paper analyzes the formation of the artistic style of Cassatt’s mother and son oil paintings from three aspects: family environment,study tour experience and impressionism.Secondly,from the level of "meaningful form",it analyzes the composition form,color expression,line rhythm and metaphor characteristics of character modeling of Cassatt’s mother and child oil paintings.Finally,through Cassatt’s artistic concept and pursuit,he interprets the emotional connotation expressed in his mother’s and son’s oil paintings,And further expounds the artistic value of Cassatt’s mother and son themes oil paintings.
