Phonetics,grammar and vocabulary are three main elements of language.And vocabulary is an important basis for the development of language skills.However,vocabulary memory and application are two major obstacles for junior high school students to learn English.Thus,how to improve this situation has become important and necessary.In recent years,the application of the unit integrity instruction in English teaching has attracted great attention.It mainly emphasizes the connection of various parts and the integrity of knowledge,and attaches great importance to the integration,relevance and progressiveness of teaching design,which is conducive to the formation of structural knowledge.This research aims to explore the effects of the unit integrity instruction on English vocabulary memory and retention as well as interest in vocabulary learning for students in junior high school.Based on the Whole Language Approach,Gestalt Psychology and Constructivism Learning Theory,this research integrated the steps of the unit integrity instruction and applied the unit integrity instruction to English vocabulary teaching in junior high school,which aims to explore and answer the following three research questions:1.What are the effects of the unit integrity instruction on students’ English vocabulary memorization?2.What are the effects of the unit integrity instruction on students’ English vocabulary retention?3.What are the effects of the unit integrity instruction on students’ interest of English vocabulary learning?In this study,110 students were selected as the research subjects,and they come from Grade 7 of Yulin No.6 Middle School.Class 8 is the experimental class,while Class 7 is the control class.A 12-week teaching experiment was conducted in two classes.And questionnaire,tests and interviews were used as three main research instruments.Before the experiment,the author collected and analyzed the scores of comprehensive placement test and vocabulary pre-test of two classes.At the same time,the questionnaire for students was conducted before the experiment.By analyzing the results,it can be seen that there was no significant difference in comprehensive and vocabulary pre-test,and the questionnaire between two classes.Thus,the experiment can be conducted.After the experiment,the immediate post-test,delayed post-test and post-questionnaire were carried out respectively in two classes.And the interview was conducted on the experimental class.Finally,SPSS24.0 software was used to analyze the data of all tests and questionnaire.Through the collection and analysis of the data,the results of the research come to the following conclusions: the unit integrity instruction can greatly improve students’ vocabulary memory,students can establish relevant connections to the knowledge,students can memorize and keep words longer,they can extract and apply words in a certain context.In addition,the unit integrity instruction provides an idea for solving the fragmentation of vocabulary teaching,forgettable and difficult to use in English learning,which has also made a positive effect on students’ interest in English vocabulary learning.However,due to the limited time and research subjects of the teaching experiment,this study still has certain limitations.Therefore,in future research,the time of the experiment can be extended and the subjects of the experiment can be expanded,so as to make the results of the experiment more accurate and representative.
