A Report On E-C Translation Of Restricted Data:The History Of Nuclear Secrecy In The United States(Chapter 5)

The source text of this report is excerpted from Chapter 5 of the book Restricted Data: The History of Nuclear Secrecy in the United States,which mainly tells the development process of the US Atomic Energy Commission and related atomic secrecy policies from 1947 to 1950.In combination with the features of the source text having the referential and expressive function simultaneously,the translator takes Christiane Nord’s functionalist approach as the guide and follows the principle of function plus loyalty to analyze the questions in report from the aspects of discourse,syntax and lexis.Moreover,the report explores the guiding role of functionalist approach on such texts,as well as provides some references for relevant English-Chinese translation studies.The report is divided into five chapters.The first chapter mainly introduces the background information and translation significance in the source text.In the second chapter,the relevant requirements of the entrusting party are introduced,and the textual,syntactic,and lexical features of the source text are analyzed in the light of the top-down model of dealing with translation problems proposed by Nord.The third chapter expounds the three translation processes of pre-translation,mid-translation and post-translation.And the fourth chapter mainly analyzes the typical cases in the report.At the textual level,in order to enable the target language reader to obtain the referential and expressive functions of the source text,the translator adopts cohesion and coherence to make the translation adaptable to the reader’s cognitive environment.At the syntactic level,literal translation,adjustment of sentence order,amplification,and division are used to ensure the effective play of the target function of the translation.In terms of lexical level,conversion of part of speech,extension of word meaning and use of four-character structure are adapted to faithfully convey the original author’s thoughts and make the translation more in line with Chinese writing habits.Finally,the fifth chapter summarizes the report and puts forward some suggestions for others.
