Abstract/Summary:
The Grand Canal in China is a great water conservancy project created by ancient Chinese working people. It runs through the north and south of China, having a far-reaching influence and occupying an important position in human civilization. The English translation of the Grand Canal can help to promote the culture of the canal and spread the voice of the canal to the outside world,so that the Chinese culture shine brightly in the new era. This paper is a report on the English translation based on Chinese Heritage-Grand Canal in China(excerpt),using Peter Newmark’s semantic and communicative translation theories as a guide to discuss and study the problems encountered in the translation process. In the process of writing the report, firstly, the author introduces the source text and the purpose and significance of selecting the text for translation.Secondly, the author describes the translation process, including pre-translation,while-translation and post-translation proofreading.Thirdly, the author focuses on Peter Newmark’s semantic and communicative translation theories and analyzes the feasibility of the theories. The fourth is the case study.Under the guidance of semantic and communicative translation theories, the author discusses the translation methods and techniques used in the translation process.Among them, under the guidance of semantic translation, the translator mainly uses literal translation and transliteration with annotation. In contrast, the translator mainly adopts free translation, omission, addition, conversion and combination under communicative translation. Finally, the author summarizes the findings and limitations and suggestions in this translation practice.Through this translation practice, the translator not only accumulated translation experience and improved her bilingual ability, but also gained a deeper understanding of semantic and communicative translation theories. The translator hopes that this translation practice can provide reference for the research related to the Grand Canal and help Chinese culture to go global.
