This report is based on the translation of excerpt of The Grand Canyon of the East. The book is an introduction to Nujiang canyon. It describes the natural environment, lifestyle, history and customs of different ethnic groups of the entire canyon in detail. The excerpt tells the explorations and discoveries of western discovers and botanists in Nujiang area and some historical events of certain places within this area from the latter of the 19 th century to the early of the 20 th century.There are two chapters in this report. The first chapter is the collection of the source text and translated text. The second chapter covers five parts which are the description of the translation task, translation process, theoretical basis, case study and summary. The first two parts are the overall introduction of the report, including the description of the text, the background information and difficulties encountered in translation. The third part presents the theoretical basis of this report and case studies accordingly. The author adopts Newmark’s semantic translation and communicative translation thoery to support this translation project based on the analysis of the original text type and difficulties in translation. Then, availble approaches are given with sufficient examples to different translation situation. Based on the translation practice and theoretical study, it suggests that Newmark’s semantic translation is a proper proach for the production of exact contextual meaning and language style of the original text. Meanwhile, his communicative translation should be adopted to render those difficulties in translation caused by different syntactic structures, grammar rules and modes of expression between English and Chinese so as to make the translated version more acceptable and appealing to Chinese readers. Part four comes up with the summary, in which the writer’s experiences in translating the book and unsolved problems are briefly summarized.This report is a translation practice under the guidance of semantic translation and communicative translation. It not only inspires the author to improve the translation and Chinese language competence, but also provides more ways for people to learn about Nujiang area.
