This translation report is based on the C-E translation of The Records About the Bouyei & The Miao Ethnic Groups in Guizhou(excerpts),written by Wei Lianzhou. The book introduces the Bouyei and Miao Ethnic Groups in detail from the following aspects such as living customs, language, culture and art,as well as local monuments. The source text is selected from the part about the Bouyei ethnic group, which covers the Bouyei culture in the following aspects, such as marriage, funerals, and traditional festivals. The translator decides to use the Communicative Translation Theory by Peter Newmark to guide the translation based on the analysis of the source text.Under the guidance of the Communicative Translation Theory, the translator analyzes the translation at the lexical level, the syntactic level, and the discoursal level. At the lexical level,in the translation of the culture-loaded expressions, the translator adopts translation methods including transliteration with annotation, literal translation with annotation, and free translation to convey complete information. The methods and techniques of translation, such as free translation, and omission are used to translate four-character expressions to produce a clear and readable translation. At the syntactic level, the translator adopts translation techniques including combination, division, and conversion to restructure the long sentences, making the translation more consistent with the language habits of the target text readers. And the translation technique of amplification is adopted to supplement the components of elliptical sentences. At the discoursal level, the translator analyzes the source text from two aspects including the grammatical cohesion and lexical cohesion to achieve cohesion and coherence, which make the logic clearer.Through this translation practice,on the one hand, the translator hopes to provide valuable references and new perspectives for the translation of texts from the same field;on the other hand, the translator hopes to contribute to the preservation and transmission of the Bouyei culture,to fuel the development of the Bouyei culture, and even to promote the Bouyei culture to the world.
