Definition is the core task of bilingual dictionary compilation. For many years, the definition has been a hot topic of lexicographers’ research, and there have been many achievements.Chinese-English dictionaries are very important for ordinary English learners in China and can help them improve their English output. As a part of body verbs, foot verbs are one of the typical representatives of verbs and have semantic characteristics different from other verbs. And the definition quality of foot verbs directly affects learners’ language acquisition. However, there is currently very little research on the definition of foot verbs in Chinese-English learners’ dictionaries, and existing research mostly focuses on the representation of foot verbs in monolingual dictionaries. Therefore,it is of great significance to study the definition of foot verbs in Chinese-English learners’ dictionaries. In view of this, under the guidance of the multidimensional definition model and the schema theory, combined with qualitative and quantitative research, this thesis takes the monosyllabic, disyllabic and polysyllabic foot verbs in three authoritative Chinese-English learners’ dictionaries as the research object, and conducts an investigation and analysis of their schema structures in dictionaries. The findings are as follows: 1)The foot verbs in the three Chinese-English learner’s dictionaries show significant differences except for the sense division;2)As for the language schema, the information of morphological annotations and syntactic annotations is less, the method of annotation is single, and the examples fail to fully represent the morphological and syntactic features of foot verbs;3)As for the knowledge schema, the senses of some foot verbs is arranged without order, the choice of equivalents is inappropriate, and some pragmatic annotations is missing;4)Compared with the language schema and the knowledge schema, the network schema has not received much attention, which is reflected in the absence of cross-references of some foot verbs. This thesis is mainly based on the multidimensional definition model, starting from the principles and structure of multidimensional definition, and constructing the optimization scheme for the definition of foot verb by completing the language schema, refining the knowledge schema and strengthening the network schema. This thesis focuses on the schema situations of foot verbs in Chinese-English learners’ dictionaries. On the one hand,it is helpful to find the problems in the definition of foot verbs in mainstream Chinese-English learners’ dictionaries. On the other hand, the constructed multidimensional definition model overcomes the shortcomings of the traditional definition model, and illustrates the practicality of the multidimensional definition model through examples, which will help improve the compilation quality of future Chinese-English learners’ dictionaries, and deepen the research on the definition of foot verbs in Chinese-English learners’ dictionaries.
