Study Of Definition Of Time Averbs Between Chinese And English Learners-Oriented Dictionaries

Time adverbs are the difficulties for the second language learners to learn Chinese, also the key point of teaching Chinese as a foreign language. This thesis is a comparative and comprehensive study of The Commercial Press Learns' Dictionary of Contemporary Chinese, A Dictionary of Chinese Usage: 8,000 Words, Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English and Oxford Advanced Learner's English-Chinese Dictionary, which are four representative learners-oriented dictionaries in their languages. Based on theoretical lexicography and teaching theory, this thesis focus on the definition of Time Adverb between four dictionaries. Through the investigation of the definition of Time Adverb, this thesis conclude the perspective of users to judge the current mode of which may contribute to further study of learners-oriented dictionary.Firstly, this thesis gives a scope of the content which is going to be compared. Then, based on the detailed quantitative and qualitative analysis, the thesis investigate the definition information, definition methods and examples of the four dictionaries. Finally, the thesis try to give a new method of definite the Time Adverb with empirical research, hope to sums up a new model for Chinese learners-oriented dictionaries.This thesis is innovative in three ways: 1. Compare and analyze the definition patterns of four learner-oriented dictionaries. 2. Provide more feasible definition ways in compiling dictionary by exploring a new definition model of Time Adverbs. Especially the empirical research of this paper strives to come with a definition mode by evaluating from learner's perspective, and to promote a better understanding of the dictionary among non-native Chinese learners.
