On The Translation Of Prepositional Phrases With Different Grammatical Functions

This is a report on the translation of Belonging in Changing Educational Spaces edited by Karen Monkman and Ann Frkovich,from which the source text is an excerpt.The book focuses on the great changes in the field of education in different countries brought about by globalization,and explores how the changes affect the way students,teachers,and parents seek a sense of belonging.Two chapters of the book,Chapter 13 and Chapter 14,constitute the source text.The former,dealing with the concept of global citizenship,focuses on the case of a university in Japan,and the latter analyzes the development of the Diploma Program of the International Baccalaureate in private schools in Argentina.In accordance with the translation theory put forward by Peter Newmark,the source text is typically informative,thus being appropriate for communicative translation.Hence,the source text was translated under the guidance of the theory of communicative translation.In this report,from the perspective of the translation of prepositional phrases,especially those functioning as attributives and adverbials,the author adopted specific translation methods including omission,inversion,division and conversion,and summarized experience,enlightenment and problems gained from the project through the analysis of various examples.
