| The source text of translation report is excerpted from Chapters 5 and 6 of The Climate Demon by R.Saravanan.The excerpt introduces the trend of climate prediction and explores the leading factor resulting in global warming.Besides,it also records the discovery of ozone hole and figures out the reason of ozone depletion. As climate change has increasingly become a public concern, the translation practice can popularize more knowledge about climate prediction and ozone depletion to readers, and provide some references for the translation of scientific and technical text.According to Peter Newmark’s text typology, the source text is categorized as informative text, whose purpose is to convey information to readers. The translator, under the guidance of communicative translation, overcame translation difficulties in a targeted manner with proper translation methods and techniques. The translation difficulties mainly include appositive phrase, passive voice, attributive clause and metaphor.Solutions to appositive phrase include division and restructuring. There are three solutions for addressing the translation difficulties of passive voice, including conversion into active voice, retaining the passive meaning and translating passive voice into a sentence without subject. As for the translation of attributive clause, the translator can embed an attribute ahead of the antecedent or add a pronoun as the subject of the clause. When it comes to the translation of metaphor, its corresponding solutions include retaining metaphorical meaning and omitting metaphorical image. The translator effectively addressed translation difficulties during the practice under the guidance of communicative translation. |
