A Report On The Translation Of Steel Structures:Considerations To Reduce Failures Due To Instability(Excerpt)

Steel structures have been widely used and promoted in China’s construction industry as they serve as the backbone support for the entire building.With the rapid development of the steel structure industry,there is an increasing technical exchange of the related knowledge at home and abroad,making translation in this field crucial for scientific and technological communication.The book Steel Structures: Considerations to Reduce Failures Due to Instability published by the American Society of Civil Engineers(ASCE)mainly introduces the internal and external forces that cause instability of steel structures such as the effects of steel producing,rolling and welding,and the proposed measures to reduce the failure of steel structures due to instability.Under the guidance of Skopos Theory and based on its three basic rules,this report discusses the translation at lexical,syntactic,and textual levels by appropriate translation techniques.At lexical level,it mainly discusses the translation of terminology and nominalized phrases,that is,translating the terminology according to its corresponding expression and transforming the parts of the nominalized phrases.At syntactic level,the report discusses reasonable voice shifting,parts of speech converting,adjustments of sentence order,division and combination to deal with passive voice,participial structures and complex sentences.At textual level,techniques such as using conjunction,reference,repetition and ellipsis are used to improve the cohesion and coherence of the text.After completing this translation practice under the guidance of Skopos Theory,the translator summarizes the techniques used to solve the problems encountered in the translation,and hopes to provide reference for translators engaged in steel structure translation and promote its further development.
