Scientific English, as an important variety of English, plays a significant part intoday’s business communication and scientific exchanges. Close cooperation in thefield of petroleum and natural gas between China and foreign countries makes theresearch on scientific translation more necessary. This paper, focusing on theInternational Standard of Fixed Steel Offshore Structures, illustrates the translationtheories and skills used in such translation literature.International Standard of Fixed Steel Offshore Structures is an English-Chinesetranslation script from a translation workshop. Early April in2011, the author tried tofind a part-time job as an English Translator to practice herself. After a series ofefforts, the author finally received an English-Chinese test translation from theSinolize Translation Workshop, which was a small translation organization in Beijing,and passed the test successfully. International Standard of Fixed Steel OffshoreStructures is the first translation task the author has received and the total words reachover28,700. The translation process contains first draft, proofreading and last draft. Inthe first draft, one paragraph of English was followed by one paragraph of Chineseconsidering the convenience of proofreading. It took the author eight days toaccomplish the first translation of the target text due to the limitation of time and thedifficulty of translation script. Several factors, such as the consistency of items,whether there is omission or wrongly written characters, should be given enoughattention to. Finally, the author reorganized the script, handed over to the responsibleman and gained a favorable reception.Guided by skopos theory and function plus loyalty theory of GermanFunctionalists, the first part of this retrospective research report is a brief analysis ofthe source text, which covers a introduction to the differences among literary works,business English, slogan English and ad English, and scientific literatures from thepoint of literary style and language features; the second part is literature review, inwhich introduces German Functionalist Approaches, the supporting theory of thisreport; then it comes the main body of this report: case studies, in this part translationtactics in the translation of long sentences, technical terms and passive sentences arepresented in detail; and the fourth part, also the last part is conclusion.
