The Sino-Soviet Cultural Association was a very active civil society organisation for cultural exchange with the Soviet Union from the mid-1930 s to the late 1940 s,and Sino-Soviet Culture was its journal and a large and influential comprehensive magazine at the time.It was also a large and influential comprehensive magazine at the time.With the translation and introduction of Russian and Soviet literature as one of its main focuses,Sino-Soviet Culture played an important role in the translation and introduction of Russian and Soviet literature.This article examines the translation and introduction of Russian and Soviet literature in Sino-Soviet Culture.In addition to the introduction and conclusion,the paper is divided into five chapters.The introduction introduces the object of the study,the state of the research and research ideas of this paper.The first chapter is on the translation of Russian classical writers of the 19 th century.Among the Russian classical writers,Sino-Soviet Culture focuses on the translations of Pushkin,Lermontov and L.Tolstoy.For Pushkin and Lermontov,Sino-Soviet Culture published Chinese translations of many of their works,as well as a number of introductory and research articles on their lives and creative works,analysing their ideological and artistic characteristics and evaluating their status and influence in literary history.The translations of L.Tolstoy focus on three main areas:the interpretation and evaluation of L.Tolstoy’s three major masterpieces;the introduction and evaluation of the dramatic adaptations of L.Tolstoy’s masterpieces;and a comprehensive discussion of L.Tolstoy.The second chapter is a translation of Gorky,the founder of Soviet socialist literature.Gorky is the writer to whom Sino-Soviet Culture has devoted the most attention,and there are more articles on him in translation than on almost all classical Russian writers combined.The translation of Gorky in Sino-Soviet Culture covers a wide range of topics,including: a translation of Gorky’s works;an introduction to Gorky’s life and creative profile;an exposition of Gorky’s ideological and artistic characteristics;a review of Gorky’s representative works;and an assessment of Gorky’s achievements,contributions and influence.In the "Gorky fever" in China,Sino-Soviet Culture has played an important role in promoting it.Its new translations of masterpieces such as Petrel and of some of Gorky’s unpublished works have effectively enriched the Chinese translation of Gorky’s works.Its introduction to and study of Gorky is rich and multifaceted,helping Chinese readers to gain a comprehensive understanding of Gorky.The third chapter is translations of other Soviet writers such as Mayakovsky and A.Tolstoy.In addition to Gorky,some of the writers who were active in Soviet literature at the time include the late Mayakovsky and A.Tolstoy.For Mayakovsky,Sino-Soviet Culture published fifteen of his poems as well as autobiographical and other accounts of his life,describing his creative history and revealing the ideological and artistic characteristics of his works.On A.Tolstoy,the translation of Sino-Soviet Culture focuses on the translation of his works,the introduction of his life,and the summary of his ideological and artistic characteristics and contributions.It publishes his long novel The Defense of Tsaritsyn and a number of political essays,biographies,creative talks,speeches and briefs,and his representative works such as Peter the Great,Marching in Misery and Ivan the Terrible are introduced and reviewed.Contemporary Soviet writers such as Ehrenburg,Simonov,Kadayev,Sholokhov,Fadeyev,Fedin and Vakhilayevskaya also receive attention in Sino-Soviet Culture,and some of their works expressing life in the "present" are highlighted in translation.The fourth chapter is Chinese writing in the translated works of Sino-Soviet Culture.The Soviet Union was an important ally of China on the world anti-fascist front,and Soviet writers also paid attention to China and wrote about it.Sino-Soviet Culture also translates works by Soviet writers about China that portray both the backwardness of modern China and the progressive image of modern China.From the works translated in Sino-Soviet Culture,it appears that the Soviet writers’ writings about China bear the subjective marks of the divide and imagination of the ’other’,the paranoia and delusion of the colonialists.Chapter five is entitled the characteristics and significance of the translation of Russian and Soviet Literature into Chinese and Soviet Culture.As a periodical that existed mainly during the war period,the translation of Russian and Soviet literature in Sino-Soviet Culture focuses on literary,combat and contemporary aspects.The translation of Russian and Soviet literature in Sino-Soviet Culture takes literary quality as its first pursuit,and it always selects writers with great literary achievements and works of high literary value for translation;Sino-Soviet Culture tends to translate writers and works with strong combat and resistance qualities,and when it summarises and introduces the ideological and artistic characteristics of writers,it also intentionally highlights their combat and resistance qualities;Sino-Soviet Culture has "The translation of Russian and Soviet literature focuses on the present.On the whole,Sino-Soviet Culture places more emphasis on Soviet literature than on classical Russian literature,and more on Soviet literature of the1930 s and the Patriotic War than on Soviet literature of the Civil War and the 1920 s.The translation of Russian and Soviet literature in Sino-Soviet Culture was important in many ways,promoting the spread of Russian and Soviet literature in China,nurturing modern Chinese writers,and inspiring the will of the Chinese people to resist the enemy.The conclusion summarises the whole text and points out the limitations of the translation of Russian and Soviet literature in Sino-Soviet Culture. |
