As the English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2022 edition)proposes that English courses should focus on core competencies and advocate students to conduct independent learning, cooperative learning and inquiry learning.Under the guidance of “student-centered” thought, the importance of student participation becomes increasingly prominent, student participation has received extensive attention and research, related research mainly focuses on the factors affecting student’ classroom participation, there is still significant room for exploration in the correlation between students’ class participation and academic performance.Guided by the theory of constructivism learning and investment learning,a junior high school in Zhumadian city was taken as an example, using research methods such as literature research, interview and questionnaire survey to conduct research on the following two questions:(1)What is the current situation of junior high school students’ participation in English class?(2)What is the correlation between class participation of junior high school students and their English grades? This study used SPSS23.0 software to conduct qualitative and quantitative analysis on the questionnaire data of 256 students collected.A total of 12 students and 2 teachers were selected from four classes of a high school in Zhumadian City for dialogue interviews. The main conclusions of this study are as follows:(1)This study found that students’ English classroom participation is average, with emotional participation being the most ideal, followed by cognitive and behavioral participation.(2)Behavioral participation, cognitive participation, and emotional participation are all positively correlated with students’ English grades. This indicates that the higher the level of students’ participation in the English classroom, especially the higher their emotional participation, the better their academic performance will be.Based on the research findings, the following suggestions are proposed for teachers’ classroom teaching:(1)Stimulate students’ learning motivation and improve their classroom participation;(2)Carefully design teaching activities to guide students to participate comprehensively;(3)Cultivate the habit of active learning and become a proactive learner;(4)Promote teacher-student equality and mutual assistance, and promote the integration of teaching and evaluation. For future research, this study will increase the sample size under ideal conditions and use different research methods from multiple perspectives to explore and research students’ class participation.
