After the disastrous defeat in the Sino-Japanese War of 1884-1895,Chinese people reflected on the way of learning from the West and began to learn from Japan.Since 1896,when the first batch of Chinese students crossed over to other countries,a large number of Chinese students have been studying in other countries in just a few years. As forerunners in learning advanced knowledge, they translate the lecture notes they receive or the works of foreign scholars back to China.THE YI SHU HUI PIEN was one of the early publications founded by Chinese students studying in Japan in The late Qing Dynasty. It was born in Tokyo,Japan in December 1900.The main editors are fourteen people, including Ji Yihui,Wu Zhenlin and Yang Tingdong, who are gathered together by learning and local relationships. The YI SHU HUI PIEN group adheres to The principle of "input civilization, only translation of books",and publishes 117 articles, including 25 translated works, introducing political, legal, economic, philosophical, historical, educational and other contents to The Chinese people in more than two years of existence.Representative works include Social Contract Theory,The Spirit of The Laws, etc. The fund of THE YI SHU HUI PIEN mainly comes from three parts: publication fee, advertisement and social donation. The outlets of THE YI SHU HUI PIEN is mainly distributed in the provinces of the middle and lower reaches of The Yangtze River and the Lingnan region, and the number keeps increasing. The style of the journal has improved the overall level through several changes and formed a concise and vivid style with natural and fluent language.Later periodicals changed from translation to writing, which reflected the higher level of students studying in Japan from accepting new ideas and new culture to thinking about ways to save the country independently.Although founded by contrast with other Chinese students,THE YI SHU HUI PIEN is conservative,is not clearly put forward the claim of violent overthrow of the Qing government, not completely separate from the reformists, but still can reflect it to the spread of new knowledge, and the powers invaded China’s ambitions to disclose.THE YI SHU HUI PIEN spread advanced knowledge and ideas.First of all,it promoted the enlightenment of political thought in China at that time. There were a large number of articles on constitutionalism in the journal, which enriched the theoretical source for the bourgeoisie constitutional movement at the end of the Qing Dynasty, and also expanded the influence of evolution theory in China.Secondly,THE YI SHU HUI PIEN helped develop a new educational culture, emphasizing the importance of political competence and comprehensive quality in school education, improving the school system, training qualified citizens, and encouraging them to study abroad to broaden their knowledge. Finally,THE YI SHU HUI PIEN has also made some contributions in the field of publishing. Its early use of double-sided printing and new type of binding has set an example for other publications of students studying in Japan.
