In the early Ming Dynasty(1368-1487),the study of calligraphy was often regarded as the remaining period of the study of calligraphy in the Yuan Dynasty.Because of the small number of the works of the study of calligraphy in this period and mostly centered on the skills of calligraphy, the view of the study of calligraphy in the early Ming Dynasty can not be fully understood.Taking the inscription of calligraphy as the research object,it is analyzed that the calligraphy in the early Ming Dynasty was influenced by the retro trend of the Yuan Dynasty and showed a strong view of worshiping the ancients. And because Zhao Mengfu is another master of the calligraphy style of Wei and Jin Dynasties, people at that time extremely respected and imitated Zhao Mengfu ’s calligraphy. In fact,Zhao Mengfu was ’’modern ’’ rather than ’’ancient ’’ in the early Ming Dynasty. The seal and official script advocated imitating the Qin and Han Dynasties, which was also another manifestation of the ancient worship view in the early Ming Dynasty. With the increasing centralization of the monarchy and the strengthening of the ideological control of Cheng-Zhu Neo-Confucianism,the concept of proper calligraphy was gradually accepted by the people of the time. The flat and elegant art style of Taige style calligraphy was not only deeply loved by the emperors in the early Ming Dynasty, but also became the standard for reading books at that time.In addition to the "righteousness " of the calligraphy,The requirement of personality of Neo-Confucianism urges people to pay more attention to their character,so the character of honesty and integrity has also become an important factor in judging the quality of calligraphers writings.Whether it is the concept of worshiping the ancients or the concept of keeping the righteousness, these concepts drove people to learn from modern calligraphers.Zhao Mengfu,Shen Du and others became the hottest objects of learning and gradually drifted away from the ancients. At this time, some people with insight were aware of the declining trend of the development of calligraphy, and the concept of seeking change began to sprout.Under the background of the increasingly turbulent government and the gradual liberation of social thoughts in the early Ming Dynasty, the consciousness of seeking change became increasingly strong.Based on the lyrical calligraphy of the Song Dynasty, the calligrapher broke through the constraints imposed by emperors and Neo-Confucianism on calligraphy and created a new transformation for the calligraphy in the early Ming Dynasty. It also paved the way for the development of calligraphy in the middle and late Ming Dynasty.
