From Wang Xianzhi To Wang Xizhi:the Qualitative Change Of The Calligraphy Of The Southern Dynasty

The Southern Dynasty was a chaotic period with endless wars in Chinese history,but from an artistic point of view,this period was a highly brilliant period in the history of calligraphy.Not only were calligraphic talents emerging in large numbers,but also the calligraphy theory of the Southern Dynasty was unprecedentedly prosperous,reaching the first peak in the history of Chinese classical calligraphic aesthetics.The Southern Dynasty,with its high aesthetic ideology of calligraphy,advocates the calligraphy of the two kings as the main object of learning.It is also common to take their calligraphy as the standard to measure the quality of others’ calligraphy.However,during this period,an interesting calligraphy phenomenon emerged: Wang Xianzhi’s calligraphy was respected in the Liu Song Dynasty,and Wang Xizhi was not respected until the Liang Dynasty in the Southern Dynasty.And the common saying of the world is that "ancient quality is beautiful today".Although the time of Wang Xizhi and Wang Xianzhi’s existence is not far from each other,they are also ancient and modern.So,must Wang Xizhi’s style of writing be "ancient quality" ? If so,what caused the change of beauty? Is this kind of almost split style worship more beneficial than harmful to the development of calligraphy,or more harmful than beneficial? In view of this phenomenon,and in order to better solve the above problems,this paper will start with "ancient quality" and "modern quality",analyze the relationship between the quality of the style of calligraphy of the two kings,and explore the specific reasons for the Southern Dynasty from the contribution of calligraphy to the development of calligraphy from the six aspects of politics,ideology,culture,family studies,literature and celebrity effects,and at the same time think about what kind of development is better and more worthy of expectation for calligraphy in the future."Take history as a mirror,you can know the ups and downs;take people as a mirror,you can know the gains and losses." A thorough understanding of the style of the two kings of the Southern Dynasty is of practical significance for us to deeply understand the concept of quality and beauty,and guide our calligraphy creation and calligraphy criticism.
