In the 1990 s,the creation of documentaries began to pay attention to the marginal figures of society, and the awareness of "humanity" began to awaken. Some creators started from individual life and social change, enriching the spiritual core of documentaries. With the research of Lefebvre,Foucault and other scholars, the "space turn" has become an important ideological trend in Western philosophy, sociology and other fields. They subvert the inherent ideological cognition and oppose the absolute superiority of time.At this point, time is no longer the only measurement reference standard, and the academic community has developed space oriented research.Space is not only a material carrier, but also a carrier with spiritual connotations that exists as a container. Its related theories are subsequently studied and applied in fields such as literature, film and television. This article takes humanities documentaries as the research object and explores the spatial construction of humanities documentaries based on spatial theory. The paper is mainly divided into the following four parts: Firstly,a brief introduction to the concepts of humanistic documentaries and spatial construction. The concept of humanistic documentaries was explained, and then the connotation of space and spatial construction was explained. The research on spatial theory by Lefebvre,Foucault, and Edward Sawyer was introduced, providing a general explanation of spatial theory.Next,it introduces the types of spatial construction in humanities documentaries.Divide the spatial types of humanities documentaries into regional space, social space, and psychological space. In terms of regional space, the analysis was mainly conducted on urban and rural spaces; The social space mainly analyzes the individual space between people and the public space between people and the environment;Psychological space is analyzed from two aspects: the emotional expression within the characters and the metaphorical symbolism of the director’s philosophy. Then,it introduces the audio-visual presentation of the spatial construction of humanistic documentaries. In terms of vision,it is mainly analyzed from three aspects: composition, light, and motion shots.Through composition, spatial implications can be presented, light can metaphorically represent the character’s inner world, and motion shots change spatial rhythm. The auditory aspect is mainly analyzed from three aspects: environmental sound, score, and character monologues.Environmental sound enhances realism, score enhances regional atmosphere, and character monologues express emotions. Finally, based on my graduation work "Ten Years of Backpack",I will elaborate on the specific practical application of spatial theory.I will analyze works from the perspective of spatial types and audio-visual language, and combine practice with theory to better create works.
