| This report includes an excerpt from Rapeseed Oil Processing Technology(Chapters 4–6)for translation practice from Chinese to English,as well as a practical discussion of translation of informative texts within the context of Catford’s translation shifts theory. Its purpose is to discuss the author’s problems and difficulties encountered during the translation process,as well as solutions to ensure the smoothness and fluency of the translated text. The text selected in this report belongs to the information-based text, which is notable for its rigor and accuracy, logical structure, and the substantial amount of data and terminology it contains,so the translation should be scientific and accurate.Under the direction of translation shifts theory, the author will analyze the challenges faced throughout the translation process by providing examples from level shifts and category shifts(mostly class shifts and structure shifts). The level shifts correspond to the four levels of phonemic, graphemic, grammatical, and lexical language, which are primarily reflected in the shift of grammar and vocabulary depending on the language, with tense conversion and singular-plural expression conversion being the most important in this Chinese to English translation practice. In contrast, category shifts entail the conversion of four aspects: structure, class, unit, and intra-system.The first two conversions appear more frequently in this translation practice of rapeseed oil processing technology and are the emphasis of this translation practice report. This translation practice report is studied in the following five parts: the first part, the task description, introduces the significance and background of the study and analyses the translation materials and features;the second part, the task process, includes the text analysis of Rapeseed Oil Processing Technology(chapters 4 to 6)and the preparation of translation tools before the translation, the problems of the first draft and the subsequent revision and quality assurance during the translation and post-translation.The second part, the task process, includes a pre-translation text analysis and preparation of translation tools for Rapeseed Oil Processing Technology(chapters 4 to 6),a while-translation presentation of problems with the first draft and subsequent revisions and quality assurance, and a post-translation presentation of proofreading and reflection on the entire translation process. The fourth part, case study, presents in detail the application of Catford’s translation shifts theory to the case of Rapeseed Oil Processing Technology in terms of both level shifts and category shifts. The fifth part, conclusion, focuses on the main findings, limitations, and prospects of translation practice, with the goal of providing some references for later scholars. |
