In recent years, increasing attention has been paid to thematic progression patterns in translation studies. As the analysis of these patterns is an effective way of investigating the layout of the source text and interpreting the author’s communicative intention, their restructuring has also attracted attention in translation practices and studies. However, few studies have yet been found on this topic in C-E translation of informative texts. Therefore, this report intends to explore the rules and techniques for translating thematic progression patterns in informative texts by comparing their similarities and differences in Chinese and English texts.Chapter 2 of Research on Carbon Emissions Trading Efficiency and Corporate Decisions for Emissions Reduction is selected as the source text in this report. The excerpt provides a systematic introduction to the current situation of the CEPT markets in China and EU,compares the price patterns of the markets, and analyzes the influencing factors of the cost effectiveness of CEPTS.It involves a large number of technical terms of energy and economy, with high density of information items conveyed with strict logic. The key point of translating this kind of text is to clarify the original information chain, and accurately convey the author’s intention.Analysis of thematic progression patterns can facilitate the study of the interconnection, cohesion, and transition between themes and rhemes in the source text, prepared for proper restructuring in translation,so as to adequately convey its ideas and communicative intentions in a logical manner.Based on the four types of thematic progression patterns proposed by Zhu Yongsheng, namely, parallel, centralized, linear and crossing patterns, this report analyzes 20 examples taken from the source text, which is compared with the patterns of the translation respectively. It is proposed that when the information chain in the source Chinese text is clear, the original thematic progression pattern can be retained in its English translation. However,on account of large differences between Chinese and English,if the original structure is lengthy and loose,or the information chain is complex, the translator should adjust the progression patterns to ensure the readability of the translation. If necessary, logical connectives and pronouns can be added to improve the coherence of the target text. |
