Ensemble coding is a process in which people automatically extract average information from complex visual information.Previous studies have shown that people can effectively extract the average value of specialized objects such as the facial, and this phenomenon does not only exist when processing specialized objects, but also exists for other nonexpertise objects(birds,planes,cars,etc.).Therefore,previous studies have shown that participants have ensemble coding processing for both specialized objects(such as facial)and nonexpertise objects(such as birds). However,it is unclear whether drawing experience affects participants’ ensemble coding processing and whether this ensemble coding ability will affect the appreciation of painting works. Therefore, this study uses eye movement technology to systematically examine the impact of painting experience on ensemble coding processing,as well as its impact on painting appreciation. In this study,Experiment 1 used the perceptual discrimination task and the ensemble coding task to examine the individual recognition ability and ensemble coding ability of specialized objects(such as facial).Participants with Chinese painting experience and college students without Chinese painting experience were selected as research subjects to explore the influence of painting experience on the integrated coding ability of faces.Experiment 2 discusses the influence of painting experience on nonexpertise objects(such as birds)ensemble coding ability.Experiment 3 adopts the impact of attractive scoring tasks to explore painting experience on individual painting words and ensemble painting works of facial and birds. The results were shown below:1)The individual recognition accuracy rate and ensemble coding scores of Chinese painting participants are significantly higher than those of college students, indicating that the painting experience has improved the individual recognition and ensemble coding abilities for objects ranging from faces to birds.2)The eye movement results in the learning phase found that the Average Fixation Duration of the Chinese painting participants on the face learning phase was larger than that of the college students in the individual recognition task, suggesting that the painting experience influences the information sampling time of face recognition.3)In the ensemble coding task,Chinese painting practitioners in the First Fixation Duration on the birds learning stage was significantly longer than that of college students, and a smaller Average Saccade Amplitude on the stage of bird Reconception phase than college students, which indicated that painting experience affected the timing strategy of sampling.4)Attractiveness rating scores were significantly greater among Chinese painting practitioners than among college students; It was found on the reaction time for ensemble attractiveness ratings that the college student in the face ensemble condition responded slower than the Chinese painting practitioners, suggesting that the painting experience influences the attractiveness rating scores and reaction time when ensemble painting works are appreciated.5)Eye movement results from painting works appreciation found that both types of groups of Chinese painting practitioners and college students were larger in the ensemble condition than in the individual condition in terms of the First Fixation Duration, and the eye movement sampling characteristics of the Average Fixation Duration,Fixation Frequent, and Average Saccade Amplitude during face appreciation were different from those of birds, which indicated that face appreciation had unique strategies. In summary, this study explored whether painting experience influences participants’ ensemble coding processing, and whether ensemble coding ability has an impact on the appreciation of painting works. The conclusion of the research can be summarized as the following three points: 1)painting experience affects individual identification and ensemble coding performance.2)Painting experience influences eye movement sampling strategies during the learning phase and the Reconception phase.3)Painting experience influences the reaction time and evaluations of attractiveness when the painting work is appreciated.
