| For a long time, there has been a certain misunderstanding of Ye Shi’s system of philosophy in the academic circle. It is generally believed that there is no metaphysical Dao with ethical value in Ye Shi’s thought. But in fact,Ye Shi’s theory had an metaphysical Dao with ethical value, from which the epistemology advocated the "perception-cultivation" path of "leading to the way by learning",which maked his philosophy showed an extremely empirical aspect.Ye Shi build a relatively complete system of innate learning based on the attitude of reconciliation between the ancient history and the empirical reality.Ye Shi-zhi’s theory of philosophy was closely connected with his economic achievements, among which the most important was the Juste-milieu and the utilitarian or moral of heart.Different from the Song people’s motto of "doing things in medium manner",Ye Shi interpreted the doctrine of the mean as a stable state of universal pursuit of peace, and believed that "peace" was the norm of human nature. His pursuit of "peace" supported his pragmatic views on the issues of land system and the rich and the poor.On the mind level, different from Zhu Yan’s single-mind,Ye Shi’s mind construction was similar to that of Xunzi. He puted forward the twomind theory that human mind coexists with utilitarian and moral. His affirmation of the public interests made him always advocate the people’s interests in the struggle for the rights of the people.Ye Shi’s theory of philosophy was empirical, that was to say,Ye Shi’s innate theory drawed nourishment from ancient history and reality. From the perspective of the style of learning, the empty words and accumulated disadvantages of Tao-Hsueh and the inclusive style of learning in eastern Zhejiang were the support for Ye Shi’s empirical philosophy. His emphasised on experience,in the tide of economic democratization in the Song Dynasty, would inevitably lead to utilitarianism in his studies, and would inevitably give birth to his two-mind theory. |
