With the rise of China,China’s policies and measures have long been closely followed by the rest of the world.Every year after the “Two Sessions”,Premier Li Keqiang meets the press and answers questions from domestic and foreign journalists, and the press conference has become an important platform for foreigners to learn about China. When answering questions, the speaker tends to use many figurative expressions, including metaphors, idioms and quotations, which pose great challenges to the on-site consecutive interpreter. From the perspective of Peter Newmark’s semantic translation and communicative translation, the thesis takes figurative expressions used by the Premier as the research target and aims to explore what kind of strategies are adopted by the on-site interpreter and what kind of strategies are adopted by student interpreters. In this thesis,an interpreting which involves 22 carefully selected examples is done by three student interpreters, which provides materials for analysis. It should be noted that the interpreting by the on-site interpreter is taken as a reference in this study. The hypothesis of this study is that the strategy of communicative translation is mainly adopted by the on-site interpreter and the three student interpreters.Through qualitative and quantitative analyses of the four renditions, the study found that the strategy of communicative translation was used more frequently, which is in line with the hypothesis.Based on the analysis result, the study proposed principles on how to use the two strategies. In the end,the study also gave advice for student interpreters for their daily interpreting exercises.
