This report is based on the author’s online E-C mock conference of the Huberman Lab podcast hosted by Dr.Andrew Huberman. As a popular science podcast, the speaker used repetitions and detailed explanations to facilitate comprehension. After transcribing the source speech and the target speech, the author found that the most frequent errors in her mock conference were information loss and explicit semantic repetitions. The interpreter failed to recognize that the purpose of the speaker’s repetitions was to facilitate understanding and omitted most repetitive information, which caused information loss. When the interpreter failed to streamline the original,it resulted in explicit semantic repetitions such as recurrence of the same words and synonyms. The author adopted Newmark’s communicative translation as the theoretical support to discuss coping strategies for redundancies. In the report, the author suggested to use paraphrasing and restructuring to deal with redundant information in the source speech.Concision and compression were recommended to reduce explicit semantic repetitions and ensure a concise and recipient-friendly rendering.
