| Since 2017,trade frictions between China and the United States have intensified. It can be said that this Sino-US trade friction is the largest trade dispute between the two countries since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1979.Its influence even extends to the political and strategic aspects beyond trade, which not only concerns the development of the two countries, but also affects the stable development of the world. This trade friction between China and the United States happened separately. In the ultimate analysis,it is the anxiety of the western countries represented by the United States about the rise of China. Therefore,it is of great practical significance to study how the media of China and the United States self mold and other mold the image of China in order to understand the differences between Chinese and Western understanding of China, and then how to deal with the international communication of the image of China in the new environment,so as to better let the international community understand the changes of China. For this purpose, this study focuses on the Sino-US trade frictions from 2017 to 2019 with two major international newspapers,China Daily and the New York Times as the research objects. It comprehensively uses content analysis and text analysis through the analysis of news reports at high, medium and low levels,to study the self shaping and other shaping of China’s national image of the two newspapers,so as to provide countermeasures for China to cope with the international communication environment better.Through research, this paper finds that the description and construction of China’s national identity by China Daily and New York times are not always true, and even have differences in a certain period, with certain subjective bias.China Daily adopts a positive expression of national discourse, aiming to build an image of a responsible major country that keeps improving institutions in all aspects, actively participates in global economic governance and is willing to cooperate with the people of the world for win-win results. The New York times,on the other hand, mostly presents a conflict framework of binary opposition, regarding China as a competitor and enemy, presenting a complicated, confrontational and slightly negative image of China. Therefore,on the one hand,Chinese media should strive to expand and improve its international communication capacity,so that its soft power influence is commensurate with the size of the economy. On the other hand,we should treat the differences in reports more rationally and improve communication strategies according to the changes in different stages of reports,so that more countries can see the positive significance of such development for them,so as to deepen mutual trust and avoid strategic misjudgment. |
