On The Shaping Function Of China Public Diplomacy To China National Image

In globalization era, as "an identity card "to enter international society, national image is playing a more and more important role in politics, economy, culture, diplomacy and other fields. As an important part of a country's soft power, national image is becoming a significant kind of resource in nation competition of the new century. On the other hand, as a new-style diplomacy mode, public diplomacy, which can directly influence other countries' public to establish one country's favorable public opinion, is becoming a useful tool to improve national image. The national image of China has gone through different historical periods. At present, China is rising, however, the national image of China has been seriously affected by the negative discourses, such as "Demonizing China", "China Threat" and "China Collapse". These negative discourses have not only put China national image into a deep puzzledom, but also have given China public diplomacy the motivity to improve national image. Since the end of Cold War, the foreign propaganda of China has gradually turned to public diplomacy and has set up an elementary system of China public diplomacy. This makes the improvement of China natinal image possible. Meanwhile, China has definitely made its national image orientation, that is, a peaceful, harmonious, and responsible national image. This will further promote public diplomacy to shape the national image of China. Under the above background, the public diplomacy of China has been developed in many aspects, and to a large extent it has improved the national image of China. However, the public diplomacy of China still has a lot of problems and there is still much room for China national image to improve. In 2005, China put forward the ideal of harmonious world, which would bring China national image great opportunities and challenges. In the new era, only when we constantly use public diplomacy to improve national image, can a real and all-around national image of China be set up to serve the rise of China.
